Mentors and Holocrons

By Darth Poopdeck, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

What pages of what books discuss Mentors and also Holocrons?

I heard of a 5xp force basic power discount and can't find out where it's from/discussed.

At the end of the character generation chapter is a section where the group can choose a shared resource. This is either a ship, a mentor, or a holocron.

A ship is a ship.

A mentor is a force using NPC that aids the party and teaches them in the ways of the force (reflected as a 5xp discount on force powers).

A holocron allows a specified skill to be treated as a career skill.

Also, it's the Force & Destiny Core Rulebook.

Actually, the Holocron gives two skills as career skills, not just one.

specifically, its on page 109 of F&D.

Also, the 5 XP discount doesn't apply when creating the characters, unless I'm mistaken.

Nope. you are not mistaken.

More that it doesn't apply when spending your character's starting XP budget.

If you're creating a Knight Level character and the party chose a Mentor as their group resource, then the Mentor benefit would very much apply.

Either way, you're probably better off not spending much (if any) of your starting XP on Force powers if you know the group is going to select a Mentor, since you can spend the XP from the character's first adventure to get those Force powers at a lower cost.

Oh my, this was very illuminating. Thanks for the question and the helpful answers!

Whoops. Just let one of my players do this. Oh well. He's joining the game late, and since the NPC is less than a shining paladin, that discount is packaged with Obligation. Reckon it balances.

Well, if you gave the character any bonus XP to bring him more up to speed with the rest of the PCs, then you're all good, as you can figure the Mentor bonus got applied then ;)
