Galaxy's Biggest Coincidence?: Rey, Lor San Tekka, Millennium Falcon, Map Piece all on Jakku

By patox, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Is it just a big coincidence that super-force-sensitive, probable high-midi-chlorian-count Rey; legendary traveler and explorer, Lor San Tekka; renown piece of junk Kessel-Run-champion Millennium Falcon; and the Galaxy's Most Wanted and friend of Dora the Explorer, the Map, just happen to all be camping out on the backwater planet of Jakku?

Or do the storytellers have a bigger master plan?

Because it's pretty dang lazy writing if it's all just a coincidence.

By the Map do you mean the missing piece they needed? Because that was with Lor San Tekka so that's hardly a coincidence.

Depending on Rey's background, she may be the reason he's there... or not.

The Falcon being there... I don't know if I'd call it lazy but it was clearly there solely for the sake of the homecoming scene with Han and Chewie. It wasn't lazy but it was a bit on point, like having CPO being built by Anakin and R2 on Padme's ship.

Coincidence .. you mean like a humble farmer on a desert planet who through no action of his own is called to adventure and meets a princess from a completely different solar system. Together they fight the evil wizard .. only to find out it was one big family reunion.

What makes it worse, is the that the popular theory linking your coincidence to my coincidence is that Rey is also related to the players in my coincidence.

I mean, of all the planets in all the solar systems in all the galaxies .. those droids literally fell into Luke's backyard.

C3PO: "Fell in to master Luke's backyard? I'm sorry sir, but have you any idea how many miles I was forced to walk trough the desert? My joints still cough up grains of sand! Then I was capptured by those awfull smelly jawas. And only then after hours being locked up in that dreadfull vehicle of theirs, me and artoo were finally sold to master Luke. I beg your pardon sir, but that's quite a big backyard, if I may say so."

But you have a point Conandoodle. A lot of plot convenience in these movies.

On the other hand, there is no such thing as coincidence. There's only the force. It guides us and binds us all together.

And by"the force" I mean "the plot". ;)

You mean the droids looking for the guy protecting the farm boy from his psycho father? There is a lot of convenient plot devices but no more than any other series. As for the Force Awakens I never gave it to much thought. Will have to watch it again to decode why everything is there. Might have something to do with all that Imperial wreckage laying about but I haven't read the Aftermath of the Empire trilogy.

Does anyone know what Lucas had already determined while making New Hope? Was Obi-Wan always there to protect Luke, who was some sort of golden child? Or was Luke just a farm boy at the right place at the right time?

From what I've heard he hadn't have a lot planned, or if he did, he kept it to himself. After a new hope came out some journalist asked Mark Hammil, who he tought Princess leia would fall in love with. He answered: "She's chump if she goes for Han." So Mark didn't know about Luke and Leia (let's hope so!) at that point. And when there's a toy of darth vader's star destroyer play set wich refers to the emperor as the "Dark Vizier", indicating Emperor palpatine wasn't even named then.

I do appreciate the lengths Monsieur Lucas went to to keep the Darth Vader / Luke Skywalker relationship reveal. Word is, VERY few people knew. At the time of filming, David Prowse said some other words inside his helmet, Hamill responded appropriately (as Lucas had given him the heads up) and then had James Earl Jones say several lines - one of which was "I am your father". It wasn't until the editing phase that it became apparent to the crew.

On an aside, Lucas may have known the direction the story was going in, and just needed to flesh it out and finalise a few thing (refer to the Dark Vizier example above). I don't think George R. R. Martin this much planned.

Stories are peppered with coincidence. It's not uncommon.

100% (okay, maybe 80-90%) not a coincidence with the roll Jakku is set to take up in upcoming new canon work.

A lot of it also depends on how much you consider the Force to be more than just some energy field, and how much that it has a will of its own. Qui-Gon mentioned following the will of the living force, and Yoda talked about destiny a far amount.

So perhaps all these coincidences is just the Force and/or Destiny moving things around so they're in the right place at the right time.
