How to best kit Biggs out for Kylo Ren?

By Samurai33, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm going to run my Biggs/Kanan list in an upcoming event and I'm expecting to see Kylo Ren make an apperance both as a crew card and a pilot. The challenge then becomes how to kit up Biggs to reduce Kylos inpact through ISYTDS.

My first thought was going for R2-D6 and determination. While this should work well against Kylo Pilot (since I can have Biggs shoot first and then get assigned the ISYTDS condition and avoid it through Determination), I fear that it would be a bit of a waste against Kylo Crew. I'm pressed to see why a competent opponent would willingly assign the condition to Biggs in the first place knowing he has determination. Though Determination could potentially work against a pilot crit from any list I face...

Then I figured R2-D6 with Draw their fire would be a better option. While Biggs would suffer the full brunt of ISYTDS should he be assigned it, DTF would make Kanan less at risk of getting it assigned and then suffering a crit from another flanking ship out of range from Biggs. If Biggs then gets blinded pilot at an inopportune time I could always pop the astromech and still retain DTF. So basically good against Kylo Crew but not as effecient as Determination against Kylo Pilot. Antoher "gamble" with DTF is that it only works on one crit and I guess I could face a situation where 2 crits are given to Kanan from a ship with Kylo Crew thus triggering it regardless.

Then the last option is just saying "screw it" to the whole fear of ISYTDS and go with another traditional option such as R4-D6 (the damage negating mech) or even M9-G8 to boost my damage rolls /nerf the opponents, as I should be able to force a Ship with Kylo crew to shoot at Biggs and leaving Kanan in a position as to not be outflanked untill I can burn the opposing ship down. After all- a blinded pilot will only stop one attack from the Ghost..the second Phantom triggered shot will go out.

Right now I'm partial to DTF on Biggs just to help the Ghost against secondary weapons that I'll surely meet in many lists, but I'd very much like your inputs.

that. Why waste against kylo crew? Cool he will assing a condition to ghost...and not be able to trigger it for another 2-3 turns.

R2-D6 + Determination is probably the best option. It protects Biggs from ISYTDS and (as Vitalis pointed out), if your opponent puts it on Kanan then it will be a few turns before it triggers.

You can also think about what is going to be carrying Kylo. Your opponent will normally put him in a Decimator. More rarely you will find him as the pilot of a shuttle but then he cannot assign ISYTDS as an action, only if you shoot at him. With Biggs and Kanan working together, you should be able to burn down a Decimator pretty quickly (especially if Kanan has a shuttle and TLT). Meanwhile the Decimator will be firing 2 red dice at Biggs who will probably be getting an extra green dice either from Range 3 or from Kanan's Tactical Jammer. There is actually a good chance you will burn down a Decimator before Biggs dies. If this happens you are in a great position as you will have all your big guns against whatever is left of the opponent's fleet.

If you opponent has taken Kylo as pilot of an UPS the you still don't have too much to worry about. Kylo (pilot) can only assign ISYTDS to ships that attack him. So initially only attack him with Biggs and then laugh at how useless you have just made his shiny new condition card. :D Once Ghost gets behind the UPS you can hammer away at it without fear since that big 4-dice gun won't be pointing towards you in a hurry.

Kanan/Biggs with Determination have a lot less to fear from ISYTDS than most other 2/3-ship builds. Just use your targetting priority appropriately and Kylo should become trivial.

Thanks for good input both of you. The only concern then would be the threat of getting a crit from a secondary weapon on the Ghost with the condition applied, but that should be managable through some decent flying and positioning. Determined Biggs it is then :)

Considering we are talking about 2 ship deci build, or ups+support build i will only say:

What secondary weapon...?

True- I'm just trying to look at all the angles. There might be a bomber or Tie/SF that could bring such stuff, but overall in a Ren list I would suspect less of a threath from those kinds of weapons to deliver crits.

I think you might be overthinking it. Integrated Astromech alone seems like it'll be a fine counter. If they assign a valuable crit to Biggs (blinded pilot), you ditch R4-D6. If not, they're still wasting time trying to kill Biggs before triggering Kylo's ability.

But if you have the points, R2-D6 plus Determination basically makes Biggs immune to crits. So that's cool.

You're absolutely right about that ;) It's one of my many challenges as an X-wing player.

Immune against Pilot crits you mean.

No he means vs crits at all. Cause for pilot ones you have Determination and for 1 of the 3 you can receive you have IA.

More then that he will be dead anyway so...

Haha I hear you. I'm the same way.

And yeah, Vitalis put it perfectly. Usually Biggs is taking one crit on to the first hull point, crits after that are usually over kill. IA gives you insurance against Ship crits. As a bonus, you don't lose the EPT when you eject R2-D6, so you can keep acting as Kylo deterrent as long as possible.
