Lone Wolf question

By Varkell72, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

Sorry if it was previously asked but I did not find here or in the faq...

Just a question on Lone Wolf (sorry if it seems stupid, maybe it's only a translation issue...) we found in yesterday local store game: " When attacking or defending, if there are no other friendly ships at Range 1-2, you may reroll 1 of your blank results". What is the meaning of "or" (attacking/defending)?Could you use this ability only when attacking or defending in the same turn, or you could use both in the same turn? In the second case should not be written "and" instead of "or"?

By the way, we checked other players in the store and most of them used it inboth ways, so we did, but just to be sure we played correctly.... :-)

Thanks in advance...

You can use it for attacking and defending, the or is just there to make it so you are able to use it for both

Ooh, X-wing card ability grammar games. "When attacking or defending," is a 2-in-1 preposition. It gives the card two distinct opportunities to trigger, without limiting the number of times the opportunity happens in a round. It's more concise than breaking into separate sentences, which would look like this: "When attacking, if there are no other friendly ships at range 1-2, you may reroll 1 blank result. OR When defending, if there are no other friendly ships at range 1-2, you may reroll 1 blank result." Twice as many words; same result with no limit on the number of uses.

Exploring the language a little further: Lone Wolf would never trigger if the card text used "and" instead of "or." This is because you are never attacking and defending at the same time.

It could be said that:

Lone Wolf triggers any time you are attacking.

Lone Wolf triggers any time you are defending.

Lone Wolf triggers any time you are Attacking or Defending.

IF Lone Wolf triggers any time you are attacking and defending it would NEVER trigger because there is no time you are doing both simultaneously.

^^ and that's why there's an "or" in the text.
