How to make sure the force is with you?

By Hepitude, in X-Wing

In a game oriented around dice rolls what are the things you do to make sure the force is with you? I'm talking about luck! I for one, firmly believe my dice rolls are better when flying only period appropriate ships that I have see in the movies (no EU, no TFA, no scum, etc.).

So I've heard things like not flying the Lambda shuttle at half mast, but what are your personal x-wing superstitions?

Positivity. Self-deception is key.

Any miniature gamer can tell you that a custom painted figure will roll better than a stock figure.

Cooking your dice can help a lot too.

I have a set of about 30 dice. I roll them all and pick out all the crits and evades. Just a stupid ritual that is obviously completely irrelevant. But My worst showing at a tournament this season is when all 15 greens on that roll were blanks....

But I've known guys who have rolled each and every single one of their core set dice and dice pack dice and prize dice literally hundreds of times each, selecting from all of them a pool of the six dice that have the best consistency in results. Personally, I think this is just as bad to selectively screen your dice for the ones with the best natural variance (air bubbles) as it is to alter your dice with artificial variance (cooking, weighting, or adding a symbol to one blank).

They would need to roll each dice over 1000 times for that to actually detect any kind of anomaly.

Yes. That's how I confirmed that my dice are fine.

Talk to your dice. Sometimes they listen.

Still, the intent there is to get an unfair advantage by having favorably skewed dice. And I think 500-600 rolls of a given dice can still be a decent detection. Your p-values might not get you into an academic journal, but a few extra symbols over the course of a tournament can be worth it.

Either way, if X-Wing was a serious competitive game, TOs would need to provide dice for each table and mandate that both players use the table dice for the game. This is what is done in most other dice-based competitive games.

Literally Palpatine

First, you must burn an effigy of JarJar.

Next, you must curse the prequels three times, destroy any copies you own, and bury them at the bottom of the harbor.

Finally, you must kneel before a lens flare and eat of the precious member berries.

Then all your red dice will be crits/hits and your greens will no longer betray you. You will be one with the force.

But will the force be with you?

If you're one with the force, it is with you.

Mine is don't play Imperial. Green dice hate me.

Amendment: If Imperial, only play Decimators.

Green dice are evil, all hail the empire's mighty battle tanks that can't dodge a wrench

Focus + Target Lock

Blood for the dice gods!!!!!

If a pilot can't solo an 8 TIE swarm (actual swarm, not "swarm" formation) then their dice will crap out on me (but I'll fly them anyways because i want to fly everything at least once)

Yeah, it's all about dice modification. I love running Kanan/Biggs due to the severe dice modification. Numerous focus tokens to reduce the effectiveness of my opponents rolling all hits/crits, 0 agility on my big ship to minimize green dice failures, FCS TL to reroll, numerous focus tokens to modify, and towards end game, evade token to further reduce damage. That way the dice are always on my side.

I "train" my dice.

When I set them on the table, I have the hit or crit showing on top and only evades on the green dice, ALWAYS. (Little good that it does me. The little buggers haven't learned anything yet and still do whatever they want.)

Me too. There is scientific basis for that. If you leave the dice on one side long enough, gravity will cause it to sag, making the side that is down heavier. I'll tell you if it makes any difference in about 10,000 years.

Threats also work well. 'Now, you're a nice little red die. But you saw what happened to the other red die that didn't roll well. You wouldn't want that to happen to you now, would you?'

i keep the sledgehammer in the car. Thats all the Force i need to convince my dice to work for me.

"Don't play against Jeff when he winks while playing a new list that he says he is unsure about" ;)

other than that, no superstitions!
