X-wing Imperial Veterans article

By TBot, in X-Wing

Great. FFG released an article telling all new players to buy two defenders after buying the core because X7 is OP as *****

Defenders without Palp will fold like any other high agility ship when the dice blank out. Only when combined do they become a super hard to kill monster.

FFG is telling new players to buy a ship that is forgiving to play and is effective with a minimal amount of upgrades.

While being on a budget

Giving players that are interested in getting into the game examples of squads that are decently competitive and only require a few expansions is a great idea for a series of articles.

That's a solid enough squad that I could see someone making the cut with it in a tournament.

We either get nothing but news, or we get articles about the game that can be helpful for new players. What's the beef? Not a new player? Well, maybe every article doesn't need to make you happy. Having something out there for new players is great. It's an article that can tell a new player that wants to get into the game and be viable at a tournament without spending a huge amount of money. It's a good article that can grow the X-wing scene. What's to complain about? It's not like this article is taking the place of something else.

I agree that it doesn't do me a lot of good, but that's OK. I'd also love to see more stuff on casual play and discussion on missions, but it doesn't happen often. Still, I'm not going to complain about it just because there is an article that does nothing for me. I don't go starting threads about how I don't care about the Open tournament events or what the new tournament package has in it.

EDIT: Wasn't there also a bunch of complaining about how much a decent tournament list costs? Here is an article about an affordable option that doesn't suck.

Haha I enjoyed the article and I think it will be a great read for anyone new to the game. I was just trolling all the people who complain about X7.

So I am a new player looking to get into X-Wing, I was actually going to make a post asking this exact question, so great job FFG! However this article might as well be written in chinese for me as I can't understand any of it. I don't expect them to hold my hand through every step, but if you are appealing to new players perhaps a better explanation of how the game works in connection with these pilots/upgrades would help.

Maybe he is doing a good job and I am just that much of newb. As a new player right now after reading that article I am actually LESS likely to buy it as I am just so confused now.

This simply isn't true. Triple x7s are just as potent as 2 x7s backed by Palp. The amount of shields and hull backed by a free evade means they can see success without Palp whereas aces needed Palp because they were dead on one blank out otherwise. X7s can have 2, sometimes even 3 of those scenarios and still be in play.

Read the pinned posts about the basics. When I was new, everything was a bit confusing (seriously--all the abbreviations for upgrades). More importantly, play some matches as it's a great way to learn. Youtube is your friend as well.

That, and then they'll bore themselves and their opponents to death with white K-turns.

Welcome to the game FrogTrigger! Usually when you play x-wing you build a squad that costs 100 points. This article tells you what expansions to buy to build a specific 100 point squad. In the example, the guy tells you to buy:

A core set- gives you the 2 tie fighters

Defender expansion - gives you colonel Vessery

Imperial Veterans expansion - gives you Countess Ryad

A-wing expansion - gives you the Push The Limit upgrade card

Honestly this is a good article for the beginners. It reminds me a bit of my first step on X-Wing Miniatures. I always advice new players to buy a ace pack after a core set (more ship, more cards, more fun) and easy to build a squad with that.

And it's good sometimes FFG do articles like this or like "no cards left behind" to give some break about waves news.

What if they're promoting existing expansions now because they're not going to announce the next wave any time soon?

That's probably good; I'm still trying to play my stuff from the two newest waves. :D

Dare to dream?

TLDR, Defenders can k-turn to victory!

Weird article. Pushing old product...

If a new player starts a collection and wants to play at his local store, sure, go for defenders. Forgiving to fly, ptl-interceptor like stack each turn without stress and 6 hp to back it up and you can get your stack even with k-turn which even if your opponent predicts, usually cannot do anything about this and even if they do, the profits from such counterplay are minimal. So, great ship not to get stomped.

But if there are two new players starting, imp vets are the worst thing to give them. Let's say one of them will run 2 x wings and e wing or some other noob squad with what he has and the other will run x7 defenders. They will not even land a single hit on x7 defenders. To defeat them, you have to struggle really hard BEFORE the game even starts to make a list that is capable of going through the token stack every turn. It's not how you introduce players.

Homing Missiles say otherwise. As do bombs, and party buses...and focus fire. Seriously though there are plenty of things that beat defenders.

Doesn't change the fact they're not fragile, they will not "fold instantly". You can beat them, but they're not fragile. 3 agi+6 hp isn't enough, really? 3 agi+focus+evade + 6hp is not fragile even if you blank out once or twice. If they are fragile, i'm wondering about interceptors, tie/fos, tie/sf, x-wing, e-wing... Wait, literally every ship in the game except big fat turret is fragile if we think this way, lol.

They still ask stores to carry that old product, so it's helpful to push it every once in a while.

Maybe so, but the point of the article is to help new players come up with a strong list on the cheap. That means that you don't have them add a $30 shuttle to a $100 epic ship.

And the fact is, people have won events with Triple x7s. It's a strong, forgiving list for new players.

I saw two guys just now at an LGS and they're both fairly new to the game (like in weeks kinda new according to the counter jockey). Looks like they were playing an early Miranda Horn list against a Roooooo based list. Funny enough, they were actually looking at the article on an iPad. Hunched over looking at it, one said, "huh, yeah maybe Imperials don't completely suck." The other quipped, "well, they only have that one ship that doesn't suck, haha." I didn't engage, I was headed to a meeting, in the store for but a flash; a voyeur as it were, passing behind them to grab a new Upsilon, so I could drop another $40, for possibly no good reason beyond it looking cool.

If I could have force choked them, I just might have; but sadly, they kind of have a bit of a point.....though I'd never admit it. Oh man, one of them might jump on the forum and see this post, good think I keep to the shadows when the sun's out. But then again, they probably need no correction.

Agreed. New players should just go play destiny. Don't play xwing. You'll never win.

No doubt. They are by no means an impossible nut to crack. But, the point I was making was that x7s aren't dependent on Palpatine to see success.
