Super Troopers

By ThatJakeGuy, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Now that my Regionals season is complete, I'm now free to play fun lists! The first one on the block is using all the powerful Troopers from the new wave. This list has plenty of good targets for Call the Vanguard, and all the Troopers are also great targets for Rally the Troops, one of my favorite unique command cards.

Looks fun! I wish Somos was better, I'd play him more, but at that cost he's just not worth it in competitive environments.

This is very similar to a list I've been playing around with. I started with 2x eJets w/ targeting computers and captain terro and have been building from there. At first I put in 1xdewback and eStormtroopers but I found that the list gets wrecked by Jedi Luke (all ranged attackers means he can always deflect), e Gamorians (all ranged attackers means always +1 block), anything with built in evade (which is a lot of units in the meta), and especially Jabba (so many units giving Jabba +1 VP). I swapped out the eStormies for the Grand Inquisitor and I think the list is much stronger. I haven't played around with Kayne Somos, 11 points is a lot but I can see how he fits. Also, you might want to consider "covering fire", you can get some massive damage out of it.

I really like Kayn. He's been one of my favorite units since his release, and I even took him 4-3 at Worlds 2015. I really want to try him with ACS, and the Jet Troopers and Terro are great units to focus and/or get free attacks from, as well as being bonkers with Rally the Troops.

That's why I had to wait until after regionals to dig this list out. It has a lot of powerful units but would fold to a competitive list.

With "Firing squad" can you select yourself to perform an attack? So you can move, firing squad, attack, focus an adjacent trooper and have him perform an attack?

"A figure is not adjacent to itself" says the RRG, so I guess that nixes that idea :(

Well that is a bummer. Another question about Kayne: Since the surge to give an adjacent figure focus says "an adjacent figure becomes focused" and not just "~focus" that means he can use the ability to give focus even if the attack misses, right?

Yes he can! It was always pretty fun to be able to focus my dudes even if I can't make range or get Dodged. With ACS, Kayn can focus and get attacks from Troopers basically across the entire battle area. I just would want to use officers to put him in position so I can attack AND Firing Squad in one go

I'm gonna have to try him out. It's a straight up swap Kayne + ACS + Rule by fear + officer for Grand inquisitor + dewback rider in my current list.

I'm still worried about the anti-ranged units though like ePigs and Luke

I can tell you from experience that both those units, while scary, melt fast to sustained fire. Especially the Gamorreans. They'll get in good licks but ultimately get wrecked before getting in more than 3 total attacks.

I'd love to hear how this turns out. My thought is that Kayn's going to have to be too close to the action to be productive.

I believe today's figures do a lot more damage and have more health than yesterday's. Kayn has a place, just like Leia. He does roll B/B/G so he has range, and I suppose with Advanced Comms, he can be 3 behind the Troopers for Firing Line.

Let us know!

I might be misremembering but is this quite right? I know with the dodge, because it doesn't make the attack miss, but just negates all damage. But if you miss on range, I don't think you can use this (or Recover) as the entire attack misses.

I believe that he can still use squad command as if you miss your range you can still spend surges to increase the acc, so the atk would still do no dmg but you could still spend your surge on focusing troopers. though on B/B/G kayn is unlikely to miss many shots haha

You can use Squad Command, Military Efficiency, and recovery surges on missed attacks, whether they missed through dodging or accuracy. Only conditions need to deal damage to be applied.

I stand corrected. According to the RRG lack of range and X is the same thing. Sorry for trying to confuse the thread :)

Repetition is good, so:

Note that dodge does make the attack miss, and insufficient accuracy makes the attack miss.

And it is the miss which causes the target to suffer 0 damage from the attack.

Blast, Cleave, and Condition keywords, and only Blast, Cleave, and Condition keywords require that the target suffered damage from the attack.

Also note the difference between condition keywords (Hide, Focus, Bleed, Stun, Weaken) and the conditions themselves (Hidden, Focused, Bleeding, Stunned, Weakened). Abilities that grant the conditions directly do not require that the target suffered damage (unless the ability specifies it explicitly).

Kayn is one of my favorites too even though he is not thought of as the most competitive option. Here is the current list I am playtesting - similar to the OP with few little differences. Kayn, Jetties, and Terro are the main hitters. Snows for front-line support and objective running. The Officer for terminal sitting or helping Kayn get into position and the Droid for doing whatever else needs to be done (and also for saying "Mam-a-lam, Mam-a-lama-lam"). I find Kayn's biggest struggle is positioning - Advanced Com helps but I wish Firing Squad granted a couple free movement points.

If Kayne has so much trouble positioning wouldn't you be better off dropping the probe and adding another officer + rule by fear

for sure. Currently trying to get by with just one because taking an officer for the sole purpose of moving Kayn is essentially adding another two points to his cost.
