Is there merit to this Heff list?

By gennataos, in X-Wing Squad Lists

First, I got unnecessarily snarky in my last list post, and for that I apologize. For this one, I'm all ears for any suggestions, even ones that say it's a bad idea altogether.

The strategic play thought is Heff blocks with Biggs close behind...pretty standard. Rex has to stick within range 1 of Biggs to stay alive to use his suppressive fire, but I'm not sure if I should float Roark out a little or just have him stick with the formation. It's probably smart to keep him protected by Biggs, but he could also chew up some hits, so as long as I don't strand him to get focused, that could be a good thing. If I can fly well and keep Heff between Biggs and the bad guys, Biggs might have a chance to survival for a while.

For the upgrades, Heff seems pretty standard. FCS for obvious reasons, Zeb for the smashings, Hera to allow Heff to pivot whenever he choses, Jammer to protect Biggs. I know the conventional wisdom for Rex is to keep him slim, and I originally did have him naked, but I ended up with some points to spend. I thought more crew to keep Biggs alive, while also being useful once he goes down, could be a good thing. I tossed Dampers on him because I had a left over point and thought it might be good for Rex to maintain arc to keep suppressive fire active. I originally didn't have Roark, I had a Y-wing stresshog. I got to thinking I'm already getting very defensive for Biggs with this build, and Roark would ensure Rex got off his suppressive fire first. I'd still have a TLT and this would also allow me another crew, with Jan ensuring Biggs got an evade each round. On Biggs, I didn't go with R4-D6 because I don't know how often 3 hits would ever get through to Biggs if I'm doing things right.

So...in theory, Biggs could be getting 3-4 green dice plus an evade and one or more focuses each turn, with at least one ship firing one fewer die.

Thoughts?

I've already tweaked it, dumping Roark for the stresshog, dumping Jyn for Tactician on Rex and moving Jan over to Heff. Instead of trying to turtle Biggs, it seemed to make sense to make people want to run away from this. Even if I can't kill a ship on the first pass, I should cripple it with a pile of stress.

You have to have a good plan for this list to work, which I did not. I keep trying to fly formations with big and small ships and I'm dreadful at it.

You are going to have a hard time turning these around AND getting decent shots. That is why I took Heff, Biggs, and two TLTs. While the formation turns around, the TLTs can still damage. Put enhanced scopes on Heff and your life will be much easier. Or drop Jan Ors and up the gold to grey Y wing.

Yeah, there was a lot of self-bumping. I'm just not good enough yet to fly that sort of list. I need to dumb down what I'm playing.

if you're sticking to this list, i'd envision it having heff set up in the middle and the three other ships on either flank,

start with a stop on the uwing and 1 forward with he rest to get an idea of where the enemy is going. and try and converge on the biggest threat

See my post in battle reports seciton for how I flew it without Enhanced scopes. It takes practice but is doable to keep everyone range 1 and bump free until Biggs drops or things get really ugly.

Basically, start like this (in your case, Rex would be the lead HWK):

Wurms absolutely is on the right track for the set up with Heff pointing forward and Biggs sideways to fall in behind. Try some funky set ups like that. Then for turning around, you have a really good arrangement with stop-k-turn on the U-wing you can flip and the rest (minus roark) do regular k-turn still ending up behind Heff. Roark just has to go wide during that event.

you said you beefed up Rex because you had points left over and you skipped R4-D6 on Biggs because of low expected damage. If that goes to plan I think R2-D2 would be the better choice and keep Rex slim. If you're taking low damage Regen is awesome for keeping Biggs alive.

Thanks, everyone, but I think I'm going to spend more time with lists which don't require formation flying to just get better at flying in general. I like the idea, but I'm not that in love with the list to keep at it.
