IWSYTDS

So could someone please explain to me how this works?

"when you suffer critical damage" what does that mean? Does it mean when the ship suffers a crit result as a result of having no shields and rolling a crit?

or does that mean if the attacker rolls a crit and the defender removes a shield (as some suggest)?

The writing of the card is as clear as the dark side.

It's the former - that's really not in question. The card is dealt directly through shields.

The detailed interactions of this card have been discussed at length without much in the way of resolution...

If, after everybody rolls their dice and all modifications are made, there is an un-canceled *kaboom* symbol, instead of suffering that critical hit as normal, you're given the face-up card on top of ISYTDS. It doesn't matter if you have shields, as the hit is not being applied to the ship; it's being replaced by the card on ISYTDS.

I'll show you the dark side replaces the normal effect of step 7ii and 7iv in the attack flow chart, since both of those is suffering critical damage.
