Just treat him as Silhouette 0
Brawn 1, Agility 2, Intellect 4, Cunning 1, Willpower 1, Presence 1 as a starting point. For a BB-8 personality, up the Presence a bit as well
For a specialization...he's an astromech, but with BB-8 I'd probably spec him out as a Hotshot. It might be just me, but the talent tree seems to fit him the best. Mechanic is a close second.
A built-in tool kit will help to flesh him out. Then drop a bit of Duty for some extra credits, and get a holo-messenger and some built-in armor to help you survive just a bit. BB-8 seems pretty durable, so maybe something low-encumbrance but with a point or two of extra soak.
Astromech Droid, Sil 0
States and gear whatever the player decides and buys.
For the npc version, take the R7 series or so as base template and tweak to taste.
With two shotgun blasts to the face!
Nah, just kidding, didn't mind the little guy.
Analyst works well too or Scientist.
I'm not a fan of "Force Awakens" and most of the fuzzy implausible plot holes (that you could fly a star destroyer through).
So my solution would be steel toed boots. BB8 might make a passable soccer ball.
As an NPC, I'd just use the stat block for a generic astromech, since that's by and large what BB-8 was, an astromech.
As a PC, I'd probably go with either Engineer or Technician as his base career, and then choose a specialization based upon what roll the droid is going to play, with Mechanic being a top-runner for a repair-focused droid, or perhaps Slicer if you want to be really good at dealing with computers and/or bypassing electronic security systems. Characteristic focus would be Intellect, going with at least a 3 and possibly also a 3 in Cunning, 2's in Agility and Willpower, and a 1 in Brawn and Presence.
1 in Presence? BB-8 had mad Presence!! He gives the best droid-puppy-dog-eyes. Plus the whole thumbs-up thing. If ever there was a droid charmer, it was BB-8.

Well, I wouldn't say that BB-8 is really a player-character, and is more of an NPC that the GM included to get the plot rolling.
I have to agree with awayputurwpn here. BB-8 definintely had a high presence, and I would make him a PC, just like Rey, Finn and Poe. He was one of the main characters in the film after all, not just a "plot device".

What you did there - saw it I did.

yeah. it was meant to be 'build' for PC-use.
thnx for inputs so far

I was thinking that, and opened up Stay on Target to confirm...and was really thoroughly unimpressed. Then my eyes fell on Hot Shot...and I thought, this is it! It's not necessarily very astromech-y, but it does seem very BB-8.
I think people are overestiminating a rank or two put into charm. The still is a useless ball of scrap metal, besides, I was under the assumption we are talking about BB Series Astromechs and not not BB-8 specific

Why. Make the pilots ship the signature ship. Bad ass ship. With bad ass pilot controling it..

Yeah, I agree, terrific spec for an astromech. It just didn't scream "BB-8" to me.

That might be the case because BB-8 basically did nothing in the movie ;-)

I think there was an unintentional segue there.
Besides, it's hard to talk about a model of droid without taking into account the only individual we know from that line. If there even was a line
Imagine trying to define Wookiees, independent of Chewbacca, a year or two after Star Wars first hit the theatres in '77. You wouldn't know what's common to the species and what is unique to Chewie.

Hence, Hot Shot

That is kind of true unfortunately. We didnt really get to see what bb8 was capable of.
Edited by DaeglanI kindnof see astromechs as falling into a few specs depending on personality.
Slicer, Mechanic, rigger, modder, outlaw tech, engineer, technician am i missing any? Tailor the peraonality to fit the chosen spec.
We have chopper who is like a cat..maybe outlaw tech. R2 loyal dog mechanic slicer dual spec. BB8 is a loyal puppy not sure what spec fits that attitude. But you see where i am going. Nice thing is they could all be BB series that just grew in different ways over time.

Gunner, Pilot,
Basically Technician, Engineer, Ace as careers. Though I would not be surprised about seeing commanders and spies either´, but those are less common.
And btw, R2-D2 is a jerk. He is loyal to few, mean to other astromechs (he downright kills own to escape himself in the clone wars), and is btw a fantastic pilot and gunner and a literal ace because he has more than just 5 confirmed kills. He is aswell stubborn like hell and most likely not slicer, but just good with computers. You don't need to have a whole spec, when just having 4 or 5 ranks in that skill is more than sufficient. R2 is really hard to determine, because he is very versatile and as well the guy who tells the story … chopper is easy, chopper is an ace rigger. His signature vehicle is the ghost, he has the piloting and gunnery skills, the mechanic skills and he has the attitude for it.
And BB-8? He is an NPC without any special abilities until the player who wanted to play him shows up for the second episode of the campaign. That is if he ever shows up. ;-)
edit: Oh and the empire might use a few mechs as Analysts as well.
Edited by SEApocalypseOur group ran into an obnoxious R5 astromech a while back and the poor bot had been left in deep space, waiting for us to rendezvous with it.
We showed up 2-3 weeks later than expected so this droid had been stuck in space for the whole time.
R5-Q13 was very angry at our group and let out an angry burst of Astromech squawk at our group in anger. So the Ortolan grabbed a Ion Blaster and "subdued" the droid.
The two haven't gotten along since . . .
The moral of the story is you could also blast BB-8 with an Ion Cannon.
I really hope that Ep VIII is substantially better than the the previous installment. It should be. JJ Abrams name is nowhere near the credits.
I can feel your JJ-hate.
Now, give in to your anger!
