Rise of Dread Knight Terro

By Polda, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Inspired by the eyes and back of the mutant Rancor in Jedi Academy I have decided I am going to ruin my Captain Terro miniature.

How you ask? By attempting to sculpt over it. And since the Internet thrives on the pain of others, I am turning this into a diary.

Straight away couple of questions pop up:

1. Can I sculpt? OH HELL NO!

2. Is it going to look any good? Probably not. (Am I even using the right material? Pfffft I dunno.)

3. Am I gonna try anyway? YUP.

So armed with no skills and access to youtube, here's Day 1:

Day One, Part One: A Rough Prototype
Originally I wanted to include some armor and the chemical cylinders so I made a quick test layout with random cr*p found on my desk - white tack, clump foliage and a paperclip.

Let's just say the initial look was NOT amazing.

Day One, Part Two: These aren't the sharp edges you're looking for...

Decided to skip the horn and chemical canisters to instead go with more armor segments, including some on the legs.

Also a cape.

And a sick pauldron.

And the flamethrower.

...
Somebody stop me please.

NOTES:

The armor pieces are just little boomerang shaped bits of green stuff each overlaying the last one. That's how as far as I am able to take it with the "sculpting" :D The edges are not sharp but from gaming distance it looks armor-y enough.

Some sanding is required.

Come back later, if you can handle it.

Day Two, Part One: The Primed Suspect

Undercoated the scale armor with black so I could put some metallic paint on top but I actually like the black, or at least dark grey.

Looking forward to the end result.

Dang it already looks awesome. I patiently await further updates.

Day Two, Part Two: Going Green

First let's try the usual color scheme - green. I added some speckling of black and white dots because lizards. Not quite working for me.

Day Two, Part Three: Warming up to new ideas

That's better.

Day Two, Part Four: Scales of War

Now that's what I'm talking about. Now he looks like a proper lizard!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAANNND since Phasma was horribly underused in FA why not try that?

Day Two, Part Five: The Shield's a standard feature

Very cool, so far! I like the use of the tree for the flame, very creative use of material!!

Nice basing, too.

Day Three: Flame On!

Wow. The colors on the dewback are amazing, very well done!

I mean the whole thing is amazing and the use of the tree for flame is genius.

I think I am going to be forced to copy your dewback color scheme.

Thanks. Just be careful with your color choices. I googled images of iguanas and the spaces between the lighter scales are the same color as the rest of the body. I wanted mine to have a green head, however you need to take into consideration that an orange wash will tint the color under it. So I used a very light blue and washed it with a mix of Reikland Fleshshade and Cassondora Yellow and that got me the green I wanted.

Excellent work.
