Auckland, New Zealand Regionals

By Spidey NZ, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hi there Guys,

I attended a Regional Tournament on Monday (public holiday)

There were 6 Players in total. so we all came top 8 :)

I came 4th Running a Smugglers list. (1-2)

Smugglers Run:

Jyn

Gideon

Temp alliance

Black market

Jabba

Vinto

Hired guns Reg X2

Trandoshans Reg

Greedo.

Winning list was (3-0)

Jedi Luke
Elite Alliance Rangers
Obi-Wan
Gideon
C-3PO
Alliance Smuggler
Rebel High Command

*i faced this list on my first match up. i got torn apart. i should have focused on luke.

2nd Place list was:

was similar list with , Elite Echo Base Troopers, R2-D2 subbing in for Obi, smuggler and high command

*did not face this list.

3rd Place was:

Jabba,

Vinto,

Rancor+Feeding Frenzy,

Beast Tamer,

Elite Weequays,

Elite Gamorreans,

Black Market,

Devious Scheme

* i faced this list (cantina, crate grab.), and lost. that rancor was scary. i should have focused on it, as most of the command cards were creature based. he did a great 'crush' on one of my hired guns with a crate. had some good laughs at that.

4th was me

5th was:

wookie warrior list, with davith

*did not face it or see the details of the list.

6th was: (0-3)

double Dewback

Kayn - comms system

elite jet troopers X2

*I faced this list ISB map (with the turrets). those jet troopers can move. they spilt for two turrets, i focused on one, and managed to thin them out.

Over all it was really fun. im more of a campaign player, and have recently got into skirmish. I play for fun more than super competitive and try to make thematic lists. I bring a list of each faction, and ask around to see what the faction spread is so i can make more variety. i dont really like mirror matches that much. Im hoping the IA skirmish scene gets a bit bigger, i would love more casual games.

Thanks

Good on you for trying something different. Not surprised that list won it all as Jedi Luke + E. Rangers are among the top of the meta right now.

I still prefer the E. Echo Base troopers, but in this case it looks like they got out worked.

Glad you had fun. Curious we have a poll going about this but, what is it about Skirmish that finally drew you in from your campaign play?

I think it was a time thing. the campaign requires time and 5 players. skirmish, quick games and 2 player. Also i wanted to use models that don't see the table in the campaign much.

I still prefer the campaign over Skirmish. but they are both fun

I was the Merc player who finished 3rd (2-1 record). I lost to the 2nd place Rebel list. Prior to this tournament I'd only played skirmish against my friend, who was the guy who came 1st. I'd practiced against his list a few times and got smashed, so when I saw I was facing Jedi Luke+eRangers in round 1 against a different opponent, I was wondering what I'd done to deserve such a fate :)

My list was all new Jabba's Realm (and accompanying wave). It started out as a translation of Beast Machines, with new units: Jabba instead of Gideon+C-3PO, Rancor instead of Bantha, 2 x Weequays instead of 2 x HKs, Gamorreans instead of Tuskens. At some point in testing I switched to Vinto and never looked back. All my units played their part on the day, but he was my MVP and amazing value for 5 points. Black Market was a very late addition because my initial evalution of it was in the context of the old scoring roles. With the new scoring where early VPs are much easier to come by, it's pure gold. Especially when the drawback of strain is almost always irrelevant when you can put it as damage on Jabba. (Generally if he's in danger of dying from getting attacked, you're already in trouble.)

That round 1 match ended up being very close. Vinto whiffed a shot against the Dianoga when it had 1 damage remaining, so if it had hit it would have tipped the score in my favour. In the end though I made a mistake and ended up with all my remaining forces on one side of the map, which allowed a wounded Luke to hide behind an Echo Base Trooper and then scamper to the safety of the opposite side when time was almost up.

Round 2 was vs Spidey NZ and his list, which was a very different Merc list than mine, but with Jabba and Vinto in common. (Sorry about the mirror match mate! What was the name of that other Hutt again?). My plan was to prioritise taking down Jyn, Vinto and the Trandoshans and generally ignore the Hired Guns until later. That strategy eventually worked, but not before the Rancor's first attempt at brutality was dodged by both Jyn and Vinto!

In round 3 I played the 5th place list, which from memory was (39 points total):

Davith
Wookiee Warriors x3
Gideon w/On a Diplomatic Mission
R2-D2
C-3PO

I hadn't faced Wookiees so I wasn't sure how hard it would be to get through all those hit points. In turn 1 he rushed Davith down to my terminal (on the ISB map) with help from Gideon, and I had the right command cards in hand to gun him down straight away with Vinto. From there the Wookiees took a while to wear down the Rancor once I trained him, which bought me enough time to pick off the Wookiees one by one.

It was great getting to play against a bunch of different people. Plus I can't complain about all the loot :)

thanks for the write up. it was nice to meet and play against you. hopefully play again in some casual meet ups

Thanks for the write-up.

I had the winning list.

When I first saw Wave 8 I just assumed I'd be playing mercenaries as they seemed to have all the fun new toys. I read a posting here about the Luke/Ranger/eEcho list winning a tournament. So I gave it a try in our testing. And it just kept winning. I changed it a little as I decided command cards were very valuable (especially Son of Skywalker and the Hunter cards) so I wanted to include Rebel High Command. So I stole a point from the eEchoes and R2-D2 and replaced them with Obi-Wan and the Smuggler. Obi-Wan fills the same role as the eEchoes - a big distraction to soak up hits while my other units shred things. The smuggler mostly just opened doors and sat on terminals and provided me with an important 6th activation to increase my chances of going last with my Rangers in round one.

My first game was against Spidey NZ on the Dianoga map. I took one shot at the Dianoga early on but there were always convenient units for my Rangers to shoot at instead since they can hit units outside the other side of the central room, so I focused on them instead. Mostly things went my way, with the exception of Vinto and Jyn who did a lot of damage and were remarkably hard to kill. Vinto's extra point of damage was particularly effective as his other units regularly left my units on one health.

My second game was against the Imperial list. He also had an elite officer. This was on Obi-Wan's crate map. I deployed at the south end, far away from the crates, and as my list is all about inflicting damage I never even got close to the crates. I was somewhat nervous about this game as my opponent beat me in the Regionals last year. However, I did not need to worry. His whole squad was gone with 30 minutes left on the timer and only Obi-Wan and the Smuggler were dead on my side.

Since I had some time I had a look over at the other games, being particularly interested in the game between the other two people who won their first match (I was the odd player who got paired down). This was the wookiee list and the other Luke/Ranger list. I was hoping the wookiee list would win for the purely selfish reason that I didn't want to play against another Luke/Ranger list. But it was not to be and the other Luke/Ranger list won, so I was up against him in the match for first place.

The third and final game was on the ISB map, To Your Stations. I got initiative and chose the southern deployment zone (without the stairs). I setup my units hugging the left and right walls so I could open my door without fear of the opposing Rangers, however he declined to open his on turn one. I got off to a very bad start on turn one. I over-extended Obi-Wan to claim the single turret, not noticing that he was in range of Luke. Between Luke, something else (eEcho?) and Call the Vanguard at the start of round two, Obi-Wan was down and I hadn't done a single point of damage. Then I got lucky. My opponent activated C-3PO first to focus a Ranger. I then activated my Rangers. I believe all three were focused (two from round 1, one from Obi-Wan's death). The first one hit Luke with Element of Surprise. The second one hit Luke. The third one shot at Luke, but Luke dodged, at which point I revealed the same two cards used to fell Obi-Wan - Heightened Reflexes and Assassinate, which enabled me to kill an unhurt Luke in a single group activation. I think I also played Son of Skywalker this round (though it could have been the next round). Things snowballed fairly heavily from this point and my opponent conceded with one eEcho and R2-D2 left up against Luke, one or two Rangers and all three support units (I think).

So I had a very good time and I'm definitely looking forward to next year. New Zealand is small so we don't get Nationals so this is as good as we get without international flights. And thanks for all the practice, scwont, that helped a lot.

I too bought Imperial Assault for the Campaign. I played a lot of Descent 1.0, and this was supposed to fix many of the faults in Descent 2.0 (which fell quite flat when I bought that). Skirmish only came later. Now it's my favourite game, playing either version, with a preference for Skirmish. I also learnt how to paint about a year ago so I could have a painted Imperial Assault set after the guy I was paying to paint my pieces got too busy.

sounds like a lot of fun.

thanks for the write up.

Agreed great write ups on both ends, glad to hear you guys had fun and great to see some new players in your local skirmish scene.

those one shot rangers across the map at my hired guns were formidable. great playing against you, I always have fun at these events and your list was impressive. your painting is coming across nicely also.

Thanks, I had fun too. I was not expecting to go up against an 8-activation list.
I tried to upload a photo of the rest of my Wave 8 figures but got the helpful "You are only allowed to upload 501.76kb." error.

Spidey NZ's Smuggler list at the top of the first post. Lots of cheap units.
