Wave XI Speculation

By dpb1298, in X-Wing

Imperial :

Tie Reaper : A fast small support ship like the tie shuttle (only 4pts crew) but with better move.

Skystrike Academy Ace : A ace box with news interceptors from Rebels

Rebels :

Phantom Mk II : Another rear-attack small ship.

Scarif Heroes : Another ace box come with 2 blue squadron X-Wing, vp5 generic with medals ans 0pts astromech

Scum :

Tie Mining Guild : Everyone need tie :P

I hope we will see a campaign box with pilots in their proper ship :

Shara Bey in her A-Wing ; Norra Wexley in her Y-wing ; Valen Rudor in his Tie Fighter ; Braylen Stramm in his B-Wing ....

Gunboat

Nostalgia. You flew them for a good chunk of the TIE Fighter video game, one of the greatest combat flight sims of all time and a game that a lot of X-wing players grew up on.

FFG made a big mistake punting the TIE Punishest instead of the Gunboat.

I also grew up on the X-Wing and TIE Fighter DOS games, and I really enjoyed the Gunboat. Something that wasn't an eyeball with solar panels. Plus I loved the catty complaints in the manual about "The Starwing is a beautiful design from Cygnus Spaceworks" devolving down into "the X-Wing would have been an Imperial ship if it weren't for those traitorous dogs at Incom"

I'm expecting (and hoping) for more A-Wing pilots soon. Plenty to choose from Rebels, like Ahsoka, Hera, Sabine, Phoenix Squad. There's also Poe's mother Shara who flew one in the Battle of Endor. Rebels A-Wings even had a backseat for a co-pilot or trainer, so that could introduce another title for a crew member.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if Scum got a captured Imperial Shuttle, also from Rebels, with pilots like Hando, Azmorgian, and one of his Ugnaught crew.

They'd probably have sold a lot more units had they released the Gunboat over that abortion.

Those all sound like candidates for Ace or Veterans packs Cununculus. Well, aside from the Reaper, which I would dismiss as a blink-or-you'll-miss-it ship if we hadn't already had a blink-or-you'll-miss-it ship in Wave 10.

A rather belated respons after a week of illness, but I have to say you have a point.

I have seen other interesting ideas in the past week, so I am curious where this is heading.

Nonetheless I would love to see some nice additional titles / upgrades for the T-65 and maybe the Y-wing.

It would make my Rebel-collection complete...

Hope you're feeling better mate!

Agree completely about Rebel X and Y Wings - T-65s need some kind of edge as has been mentioned dozens of times, while more Rebel Y-Wing pilots (with Elite Talents! ) would certainly be welcome. And more Astromechs of all varieties.

I could see a "Heroes of Scariff" style expansion, with Blue Squadron repaints for the X and Y wing, some of the missing pilots and K2S0 PILOT/CREW FOR THE U-WING.

Not saying it will ever happen, buuuuuuuuuut....

I'd love to see a return to the X-Wing PC games for the next wave, for old time's sake.

The YT-2000 "Otana" and XG-1 have both appeared in other FFG games, and the XG-1 quite recently as well so that gives me a bit of hope. Add the Cloakshape and Skipray for Scum and you've got a delicious wave of old-school goodness

However...

Sabine's TIE has set a scary precedent; repaints in Wave releases. So we could end up seeing a Partisan X-Wing or Mining Guild Pac-Man TIE. There's also the Resistance Transport for Force Awakens plus Krennic's Shuttle, the Imperial Cargo Shuttle and TIE Reaper. And after how well the ARC-170 was received, I'm not so sure the N1 is out of the question, either.

I'll happily take everything you listed here.

Wave 11 will be the best. The Empire will get the TIE Avenger, Gunboat, Missileboat. Rebels get Purple Squadron Y-Wing, X-Wing, A-Wing, SV, Get Zann TIE Defender, Zann K-Wing, Zann Elite Star Viper.

That could actually be pretty cool, and a way to bring other characters into their other (proper) craft.

my guess (probably wrong)

Imperial :

Gunboat (because everyone wants it and its tied into the game that gives this game its name)

TIE reaper OR Krennic's Shuttle (but it would have to be vastly different than the Lambda and Rens)

Rebel :

Some kind of T-65 X-wing / Y-wing expansion related to Rouge One that would bring new titles and modifications for those ships to make them viable again. There would also be new pilots (duh) with EPTs hopefully , astromechs etc. This may also include Saw's X-Wings (which look sick) or that could be a separate expansion but those X-wings MAY also be considered Scum...

Scum :

Starviper / Kihraxz Aces or Veterans pack with Titles / Modifications to make these ship viable again, also with new pilots (duh)

Mining Guild TIE

H-6 Scurrg

Saw's T-65 X-wings (if they are not considered Rebel, which based on Rouge One could be the case)

New Rebel Veterans box will come out before wave 11, with two T-65s. Like the Imperial Aces Interceptors, they'll be different paints, matched by titles in the box in this case. One will be able to make use of the generic "Blue Squadron" title upgrade, which will come in multiples and offer the fabled X-wing Fix. The other will be a unique title "Pink Five".

As for Wave 11, my thoughts are-

Imperials will get either the Sentinel-class or TIE Reaper.

Rebels will get....something? Maybe a sheathipede that can dock with the VCX by using the "Phantom 2" title?

Scum will get either H-6 Scurrg or YT-2000 "Otana"; either way, yay- another large base scum.

"Pink five"....hehehehehehehehehe

X-wing titles might be an interesting approach honestly.. especially as they would probably be easier to source from legends than the full fighters are.

like say, T-65BR Recon-X which could replace the torpedo slot with a Systems one. would allow some very interesting builds.

other options could be taken for X-wing upgrades too.. like say Missile Refit as a torpedo type that swaps the Torpedo slot for a missile slot (it is one of the options in the Legends setting material, but is never seen. such a card could even be "T-65, T-70 X-wing only" since the T-70 is supposed to be able to do it as well)

Xwing TMG doesn't get it's name from the Xwing computer game. It gets it's name from the ship.

Gunboat

has to be. Must be. Will be.

Are you denying that the branding was intentional, given the popularity of the PC Games? And especially given FFG's history of converting PC Games to the tabletop format?

If I had to guess, I'd say it was used because the name is really good, period. Not specifically to reference the computer game.

But unless we ask, we cannot really know for sure, can we?

Are you sure? I mean how would we know either way? And Mr. Steele and the Defender and advanced protons and ion munitions and fighter scale tractor weapons and the Liberty in Armada certainly hint at inspiration coming from the XWing series

Given that the other FFG products use names like Destiny, Armada, Rebellion and this product uses a thing instead of a concept for a title, that's a strong strong hint it's going for the flight sim nostalgia.

plus, with the mouse in charge, I don't know if they'd tell us if the PC (non Disney) game series was the source of name.

Don't forget Emon Azzameen and Keyan Farlander. FFG have clearly mined the X-Wing PC Games for inspiration. Maarek Steele was a Wave 1 release, and taken directly from the PC games.

However marketing 101 gives us brand recognition. The X-Wing PC Games were almost universally beloved by players from the era they were released (who also happen now to be young adults with disposable income), and remains one of the top-rated Star Wars video game series to this day. That's a captive market, right there. FFG could have given us "Star Wars - The Miniatures Game" - the fact that they led with X-Wing rather than Star Wars is more than coincidental, it was deliberate. They wanted to attract fans of the old PC games. And it's not the first time they've targeted fans of PC games, either, it's a recurring theme (see: Doom, X-Com, Sid Meier's Civilization etc.)
