Rellegar's Rest Staff of light Question

By thiagolbahia, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello There!

So, on the Rellegar's Rest quest (second map), it states:

1- a figure with the white objective token on its base is carrying the staff.

2- A hero carriyng the staff receives the " staff of light" relic card.

3- A leutenant carriyng the staff immediatlely wields the Staff of shadows relic".

So, my conclusions, i wanna know if im right or dead wrong:

1 - A figure means i can pick it up with any monsters i have,, just cant use it (wield it). (mostly to prevent heroes to pick it up).

2 - Heroes that pick it up is carrying the Staff, not wielding it, so they cannot use it on this map. (carry is not wield)

3 - A leutenant, on the other hand, can use it immediately, since it states it wields the relic.

Some may say, " then why the hell it states that a hero is carrying the staff since he cannot use it? Well, thats because if at the end of the quest any hero is carrying the staff he keeps it. If a monster is carrying it, overlord keep it.(this staff is not the objective of the quest).

What u guys think about this? Thanks!!

Yes, all figures that are allowed to perform special actions may pick up the white objective token. This includes heroes, monsters and allies (if there was one in this quest) but excludes familiars treated as heroes/figures.

In other quests which include objective tokens representing a relic the "receive the Relic card" part is absent, and in these cases FFG has ruled that the figure cannot use the relic during the quest (e.g. Monster's Hoard, The Dawnblade, The Desecreated Tomb). As the quest text in Rellegar's Rest explicitly states that a hero/lieutenant carrying the white objective token receives the Relic card, I would say that it can be equipped and used by those figures.

No diference between wield and carry? They use two diferent words for the same meaning?

The use of the term "wield" in Descent is specific to OL versions of relics. OL relics usually do not represent regular equipment but either add/modify the abilities of the lieutenant or grant new powers to the OL that are more or less independent from the lieutenant (such as the Staff of Shadows in this case).

This is different from hero versions of relics which are always considered as regular items.

I think that "wield" is reflecting this difference and that "receive the relic Card" is crucial here.

Thank you very much! That clarified a lot!

I agree. LTs do not have an "equip " step in their activation. Usually, in order to have a relic "equipped" (wield it), the LT has to have that relic from the start of the encounter. The special rules allow that to change.

For heroes, since they recieve the relic card they can use it, but it is not automatic on pickup- they have to equip the staff, first (which they can do at a specific point in their turn.)
