I was wondering if you could use R2D2 crew or Chewbacca crew on a Rebel Tie Fighter. Could you actually get a shield token this way?

You can't recover a shield if you never had one to start with, so the only way to do so would be if you also equipped a Shield Upgrade.

more specifically, rules reference states you cannot gain more shields than your printed shield value

printed value of shields on a Tie is 0

shield upgrade would make that 1

I ran Rex with shield upgrade, Chewbacca last night and it was actually really fun. My green dice betrayed me more than ever (blanked out on almost every roll) and Rex lived quite longer than he should have!

But you can equip Captured Tie since it's a mod and that's open, or was it just that he forgot?

It's because both shield upgrade and captured TIE are modifications, so you can't have Shiled Upgrade (for R2-D2) and captured TIE to protect Ahsoka from attacks.

Rey could be interesting crew for Asohka... But I'll likely fly Sabine crew since it makes a nice quiet ride for the explosives expert while the mad Kwing bombers run havoc.
