Riding beasts in EotE?

Riding beasts are prominently shown in EVERY SINGLE one of the films minus Return of the Jedi and Rogue One. They were also a large component of the old animated series Droids, which bears a strong resemblance to the look/feel of EotE.

When do they show up in A New Hope? I remember seeing some (horribly CGI'd) Dewbacks for Stormtroopers for a few seconds on Tatooine, but there was no action surrounding them, they just lumbered around. I certainly would't call it an iconic part of the film.

However did I miss that? I guess we all have our blind spots.

I don't agree with the issue over books but I do think the scene with the Dewbacks is absolutely iconic. It's masterful cinematic anachronistic expression of the Star Wars verse imo.

I never liked it, but then that could just be my reaction to the horrible '90's CGI. In the original version, they were much less focused on and I don't think the scene was any lesser for it.

Ît is iconic enough that everyone remembers this scene, even when a lot people hated it ^_^

I doubt that you can unremember the things once you have seen them. Which is part of the problem with the special edition. Dammit George, stop touching yourself!

Well, at least we can take solace in the fact that he can't add any more random CGI rocks to the OT anymore.

Riding beasts show up in EVERY version of A New Hope. Tusken riding Banthas.

Honestly? This is probably the best and most helpful post in this entire thread. Ha.

(Still holding out hope for some banthas and dewbacks - not to mention Sand People and Jawas - in a Tatooine sourcebook though...)

One of my favorite toys as a kid was the dewback, with its head/tail-lever action. (...and the molded furry legs on the saddle. Heh.)

Also, the bottom of my lunchbox had an image of a stormtrooper riding a dewback.

So, yeah, the anachronistic/Western feel of those beasts will always be iconic to me.

Banthas and dewbacks are in the card deck you also refuse to buy. The only reason you can't have the info is your own self imposed limitation. Based best as I can tell on color.

Have to agree there. I also recommend buying stay on target, since the Beast Rider Spec is wonderful for a hired gun, or a bounty hunter to have. IMO it would have fitted better in the soldier book, but I don't mind it being in the Ace book.

Also, my current group is in a AoR setting, but we use ALL the rulesets. Two of the crew have obligation, one char is a forceuser and thus has morality, but all have Duty. It really gives a complete feeling to mix all those rules together, so I encourage it. Don't discriminate the rules for their color.

Wait, that sounds wrong...

It's really a pretty oddball spec. You could lump it into any number of careers (hired gun, soldier, explorer, ace) because it's kind of it's own deal.

A Colonist Nerf herder spec would work well. Space cowboys need their space horses.

I think there is still room for the rules and maybe a universal spec to appear in a later sourcebook or even an adventure to specifically detail the rules for EOTE.

Which gives me an idea: Why not houserule it as an universal spec?

Well, that raises the question of career skills. Do you keep the four career skills it currently gives you? (No current universal specs come with career skills). It's probably not game-breaking and I'd allow it, though.

Sorry, but you're incorrect there - The Recruit Universal Spec from the AoR CRB comes with the following skills: athletics, survival, vigilance and discipline.

Oh hey! I've never actually seen anyone take that spec, so I didn't even realize it came with career skills. Thanks for letting me know!

It is a great spec, for any career with no career-specs with combat skills. One of my troupe is a Verpine Technician - Outlaw Tech, Modder (I gave them all 30XP GM grant for another spec to buy at start) and he's now saving XP for it, since he can't really do anything in ground combat (modder gave him gunnery). If you play a AoR campaign or an campaign that joins the Rebellion at one point, this spec is wonderful to represent the combat training you receive as an agent of the alliance. Perfectly suited for the diplomat career imo. And you never need to go further than this if you want to stick to your character concept.

But that's enough off-topic now, I will introduce the houserule of the beast rider spec as universal to my troupe next sunday, because I think it fits perfectly into my campaign, and reducing the cost to buy it will only further increase the chance of them buying it. Gonna have some jousting with vibro-lances or something :D
