Did you buy IA to play Campaign or Skirmish? POLL

By FrogTrigger, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

A conversation in this recent thread about what caused someone to actually play the skirmish, combined with it being a slow Friday at work for me, had me interested in the communities response to this question...

When you bought your first IA core did you plan to play:

A) Campaign only (20) (32.8%)

B) Skirmish only (6) (9.8%)

C) Both equally (9) (14.8%)

D) Campaign but thought you'd try skirmish eventually (18) (29.5%)

E) Skirmish but thought you'd try campaign eventually (5) (8.2%)

F) What is Campaign and Skirmish? I just like Star Wars (3) (4.9%)

Summary:

62.3% of people bought this game with the campaign in mind, 29.5% of that number thought they would try skirmish.

18% of people bought this game with the skirmish in mind, 8.2% of those people thought they would try campaign.

14.8% of people bought the game to play campaign and skirmish equally.

I will go first, I am option A, Campaign only. I don't even know if I really looked at the skirmish at all before I bought it, I was aware it was there, but didn't even test it out until months later. At that point I was like holy cow, this is way more fun than the campaign. Interested to see how many there are like me. Maybe this poll will serve as a source of feedback for FFG in regards to the state of skirmish entry and help motivate them to create a more user friendly skirmish only entry point. At the very least it will be interesting to see how many fall in each category.

I bought it because I love grid based combat games (I miss you so much Heroscape) and Star Wars. I never read any previews and basically bought it for the sweet minis and to have a troop level Star Wars game. So I guess C?

I bought in because I work with students and have a group that I wanted to take through a campaign type game. I'd just heard about Mice and Mystics (late) but then saw that IA was on the horizon (I believe this was the summer/fall before IA came out) and pitched the idea to them and they loved it!

So I bought for campaign. Thought skirmish looked a little interesting when I opened the box. Checked out the Kansas City regionals in 2015 (couldn't stay to play - in town for a graduation). Listened a lot to the IA command podcast (RIP) and that got me interested in skirmish, even though I knew the 4x4/Sab's were dominant. But then the errata came and I found out a store championship was only 30 mins away in January of 16, so I converted my kids over and they loved it! Now we play a campaign day maybe every 3 months, but we go to monthly skirmish tourneys, maybe a skirmish day in between every other tourney, and went to regionals last year and going in a few weeks, and planning to go to worlds if we can get tickets. Hows that for a poll option :)

Edit: Forgot I also really wanted the grid based game - had x-wing and barely got it to the table 3-5 times in 2 years because it was a lot to teach at the time and didn't like the finicky-ness of bumping with students, they got frustrated.

So "D" is the best option for me

C but I almost immediately found out the Campaign wasn't for me.

Bought it for campaign, tried to play skirmish and even volunteered as TO for a while and tried to organize events but nobody would show up, so now I just play campaign with my playgroup.

I guess I'm D

I added option F which is basically "I had no idea what the game was, I just like Star Wars"

D, and a little of F.

Loved the minis, but didn't really know what to expect from the game. I am pretty sure 90% of its use will be campaign though.

Definitely campaign.

We beat the hell out of Zombicide season 1. And no one in our group played a dungeon crawler before so IA was a no brainer purchase.

The Star Wars theme, the miniatures, the light RPG element, the plethora of missions and fusion between fun/competitive… it’s all too good.

The skirmish version never stuck with me, though I’d like to get more games in on vassal.

The dodge result/command cards can be far too swingy. It’s also off putting when I see lists that don’t feel right.

I do C) pretty equally. I like both sides of the game. I just sucks at both when it comes to winning. Lol

I guess (D). I was mostly interested in the campaign, but thought (as you put it) get around to the skirmish part eventually. As of yet, we're one mission from finishing Hoth and I have Bespin and Jabba's Palace to go before we decide to redo a campaign or try out this skirmish thing. LOL

I bought it with " D " in mind, however, I've found that " C " is where I'm currently at.

The youtube battle reports of skirmishes really inspire me to play more and the forums keep me excited and current.

Having the ally/villain minis purchased and only seeing them occasionally in campaign was a bit of a bummer, but skirmish has really kept those figures alive.

Now that I have so many minis, it's custom campaign time!

A) I was looking for a new game for our 4-5 players. We played two skirmish games, but I would need 2-player opportunities to really get into it. (And more time - my current IA activities take a lot of it.)

A

I've only just jumped into skirmish this year due to listening to people talk about it on the various IA podcasts for a long time. I originally didn't plan to at all because I was done with competitive CCG type games but since I had all the packs, many aren't as useful/used in campaign, I might as well do something with them

Skirmish has been a lot of fun!

Well both, but it ended up being campaign for a couple of reasons. 1st everyone got on board becasue we saw Star Wars flavored Descent. 2nd I was the only one who bought the game so getting others to play skirmish was kind of a pain since I would always win, then when I went to tournaments since I never played real players I consistently got crushed. 3rd when I saw the 1st worlds and saw the 4x4 which would require 4 core sets and I'm not going to lay that cash down.

Long and short I'm always in for campaign and casual skirmish, but I'll never be able to optimize a competitive skirmish list or be savy enough to compete in a meta. So (B) but now ive resigned myself to (A).

D) For me. Though I find it increasingly difficult to find 4 more people to commit to do a campaign right now sadly. School life is busy.

D) Campaign but thought you'd try skirmish eventually

A - very much for campaign. I've played the skirmish (using only my components) maybe 3 times. But I love the campaign. Actually I love being the Imperial Player so much I think I'm one of the few folk who's not obsessing about the eventual app...

E) I bought the game because I was pumped for Skirmish. I didn't think I'd be able to organize a full campaign session, as cool as the idea sounded.

Cut to a few weeks later- my wife and I had just finished a playthrough of Rebellion, and I suggested trying this new game called Imperial Assault. We did the little tutorial thing, and she actually really enjoyed it. I sort of tentatively suggested a Campaign, we went through the first mission, and were hooked. We've played one game of Skirmish- not as big of fans, though it was okay.

E. I was most interested in skirmish game from the get go. I am a casual home player. I love miniatures, so it was an easy sell to me. Star Wars + minis? Here's my money. May try campaign at some point...

To paint...and D.
