On victory points and how to score them.

By Cremate, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

We've had some renewed discussions on how to tally your score during skirmish lately; not only because of the new scoring rules, but also due to all the new ways to gain and loose/spend VPs during play.

On top of that we have "earned" VPs versus "counting as having" VPs and, for purposes of tie-breaking, kill VPs versus objective VPs (the latter being everything else).

I tossed a question on this - bundled together with a number of other questions - to Todd's Impeccable Rules Clarification Services (damnit, I wish I could have made for a better abbreviation).

This was his response. And in less than 24hrs - he must be on fire (or his keyboard for that matter)!

"When you spend VPs, you do not need to designate whether you are spending “figure” VPs or “mission” VPs. There is no meaningful distinction between the two. In the case of a tie, these points will be recalculated based on the defeated figures.
The only distinction to keep in mind is between VPs and “counts as” VPs. If you “gain” VPs (from an objective, defeated figures, or abilities like Jabba’s) they go into a single VP score.
I’ve found it helpful to think as “counts as” VPs as modifying or floating on top of this single score."

Now, if we only had a game component for tallying out scores during skirmish... ;)

Paper and pencil. Anything else is just asking for trouble when some kind of discrepancy arises.

At a recent tournament, one table had a score discrepancy. They couldn't figure out what happened though, because someone was just using a bunch of d6's to keep track of the score.

It's paper for me as well - I would just love to have one of those acrylic ones that's in some of the tournament kits.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best, paper and pencil will never fail you!

D6s? That's gross.

I'm cool with most scoring methods people use, but if you drop down some dice there's no way I'm going along with that lol. Geesh.

So now we are separately tracking VPs and not-VPs, the two pools being governed by different rules and card interactions, none of which are detailed in any rules document.

I never cease to be amazed by the FFG rules teams' uncanny ability to complicate the most straight-forward things.

Who's Todd?

Second in command on IA development after Paul Winchester

See the new Team Covenant video from like a week ago. He's on there.

Well Paul is gone now so Todd is in charge

Wait what?

Where do you find stuff like this out? Just curious.

It was mentioned in some podcasts. Also saw a link to a post on his FB where he posted about leaving to persue another interest

I'm not sure if linking to public FB post is allowed here or not but I'm sure you can find info about it

This part was actually not new, it has been discussed at length here before, and there have been previous rules clarifications on it. The new bit, is that at least we don't have to keep track of what kind of points (figure kills or objective) when loosing or spending points during the game.
