GX1-Series Battle Droid

By Spar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello Everyone!

Recently, our group has decided to try out some of the adventure supplements with new characters. This time around, I wanted to try out droids and see where that goes. While looking for a model to base off of, I found this guy . The GX1-Series Battle Droid.

A large hulking battle droid I don't think many of us would want to meet. With a head mounted blaster rifle and four arms; 2 large arms for combat and 2 smaller arms for finer manipulation, along with much more sophisticated tactical software that makes him much smarter than the average droid, he looked like a blast to play.

Our problem right now, is trying to figure out how to spec him and what career he would fit in.

His current characteristics are 4,2,3,1,2,1 (With +5 Obligation)

Brawn of 4 due to sheer size and arm bulk with healthy reverse jointed legs.

Agility of 2 since he would be an ok shot with the blaster rife in its head.

Intelligence is at 3 since he can fall back and reevaluate when losing.

Cunning of 1 since its not really out thinking but more logically thinking through the problem and less sneaking around.

Willpower of 2 for that discipline check.

Presence is at 1 since... well I don't think he would be much for talking rather than threatening.

So in short, what are your guys thoughts on characteristics and careers would suit this big guy best?

I can't really agree with you on Intellect 3 and Cunning 1.

Same. I could probably go 2 and 2 or swap them entirely. Intellect seems to be more knowledge-based in this game - even the non-knowledge skills (Mechanics and Medicine) are more about knowledge than critical thinking.

Makes sense.

So it would be a droid that can be decent at everything, or be really cunning but not much in terms of memory.

Any ideas on what specializations would be good for this droid model?

Bodyguard or Heavy would be my suggestions

Oh boy, been a while since I've seen this guy. If you think its stats from the Saga Edition book it originates from would help you figure anything out, it had Strength 16, Dexterity 16, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 8, and Charisma 13. If you had any interest in sticking closer to that, I'd say you might move Brawn down to 3 to match the Agility, and bring up its Presence.

Why would you want more Presence? A few reasons! So, its description in the original book emphasises that the GX-1 was built to meet the demands of very wealthy customers, who, you might reason, would most likely want a droid with some manners. More importantly, the book indicates that they'd most likely appear with a group of said wealthy owner's thugs or hired guards. In this game, tactical prowess is usually represented through the Presence-based skill of Leadership. If that's what you want to do, I'd say Mercenary Soldier would be a good match, for a strong balance between the droid itself being a powerful soldier, and talents that utilize Leadership to command allies.

The book does also mention that the droid is used as a personal bodyguard or enforcer. Now, Bodyguard's name may make it the obvious choice, but let's be real - it's not a very good spec for an actual bodyguard. I'd actually head over to Age of Rebellion and peek into Forged in Battle for the Vanguard spec. It has Body Guard, Improved Body Guard, and Supreme Body Guard, making it pretty much supreme at protecting others. Moving Target and Suppressing Fire are fairly good talents for tactical usage, and the Soldier career even has access to Knowledge (Warfare) if you still fancy the tactical genius idea.
