Imperial Assault with Armada (or X-Wing)

By Raging Celt, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

As new players my son and I have been enjoying off the wall combos and recreates. I am curious if anyone has combined a campaign with Armada or X-wing?

Here are my thoughts:

Battle over Scarif (IA)

Rebels race through the corridors to hand off the data tapes only to be confronted by Vader. Rebels have so many turns to stall Vader and to safely remove the tapes.

Tantive launches

Battle over Tattooine (Armada)

Devastator has to close range on Tantive and halt its movement (initiating boarding party; yeah I know it;s not in the rules yet. Work with me here!) without destroying the ship.

Once Devastator is within range the Tantive's movement is arrested and the corvette is prepared for boarding. (Rebels win a secondary victory by dumping escape pods - Imperials win a secondary victory by gunning down escape pods.)

Battle in the Corridors of the Tantive (IA)

Back to IA. Rebels must hold the incoming stormtroopers allowing for Leia to upload the disc onto R2. R2 then makes his way to the pods and off he goes.

I think it's safe to say this could go a lot of different ways. Keep in mind I am thinking off the cuff and have had the rules exactly 24 hours so I may not be on the know with the intricacies. Either way I think it could be fun to tinker with! Your thoughts?

Go for the Battle of Endor event:

Use Terro's Skirmish map for the shield generator, have Han, Chewie, Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, a group of Rebel Rangers and when Ewoks are released two or three squads of their generic versus two AT-STs, three or so squads of Stormtroopers, officers, and scout troopers once they are released with the next expansion. Really there are still a few things missing, like the SSD for Armada, but it generally can be played out. I'd think maybe by the end of this year Palpatine will be added to IA so then all of the troops for the IA part of the game would be done.

Personall I think running it concurrently would be the best, IA on endor starting where the rebel player needs to take out the objective to allow the X-wing part of the fight to start so the Armada player has to take out the waves of squadrons sent their way while keeping some squadrons alive for the X-wing player to have something to try and take the death star out with. If the shield generator doesn't fall then the rebel fleet would have to try and take out the interdictors to escape, with the Empire getting access to the Super laser every two turns or so which could destroy any medium or large ship provided the admiral isn't on it. As for the super laser tie it into the fight between Vader and Luke, maybe using some light/dark side mechanic where Luke deal extra damage or gets free surges if the dark side is pulling at him, while if he stays with the light side it could slow how long the death star needs to recharge to fire.

A good friend of mine just got Armada, and he's getting into it. We've been playing IA for several months now with my set. I want to play a capture scenario where you start with a disabled Imperial ship that has been boarded by a team of Rebels. That part would play like a skirmish. Then outside there is a battle raging on between the remainder of the forces. Whoever wins the skirmish aboard the ship, then gets that ship for the remainder of the space battle. For every round in Armada, there would be 2 rounds of IA. In my estimation, skirmish games take about 6 rounds (please correct me if you feel differently). So using that as a basis, one team would get that ship for their team about halfway through an Armada battle (Armada games are limited to 6 rounds).

I don't know if that's the kind of thing you were looking for or not, but I hope to do it someday.

I really like the campaign with the new Corellian Conflict set up. It would be cool if FFG released a pretty open ended campaign that allowed for all three games (or whatever of at least 2 core sets you owned, with whatever components you owned) to combine.

It's a really cool idea, and it would be pretty easy to imagine extra resource bonuses for the other games to tie into Corellian Conflict campaigns. Very simple house rules can make that happen.

Yeah, I think it's be fun. Each mission could utilize components from the core games with abilities for scaling. For instance, a mission might have Rebel heroes facing off against Stormtroopers, Imp officers, and Royal Guards, with options for up to 4 open groups, while Rebels could bring in various allies for increased threat. Or, X-Wing missions might have an X-Wing v 2 TIES, but could scale point caps to allow for larger fights. The way these games are designed makes something like this incredibly easy.

Keeping it small scale (50 pt X-Wing squads, 200 pt Armada fleets) would facilitate faster play, too. I'd love to play a simultaneous campaign of Imperial Assault, Corellian Conflict, and a few X-Wing matches, where wins from any match transfer to the other campaigns, and vice versa.

I wonder if it'd be possible. Certain missions across campaigns in IA (not gonna go any more specific than that) do mention naval fights going on simultaneously. Could be a neat way to actually address the importance of them.

That's the feel of what I was thinking of. Very cool! Report back if you run the boards.

I've been trying to develop a similar idea sans Armada. I've yet to nail down what a boarding action would consist of for my x-wing ships but once it has been achieved I will have maps of the of the ships connected at their docking port (another tricky part for many ship combinations). And so a skirmish would commence.

Since working on this idea I've come to realize the potential for landing on planets and having some cool campaign scenarios. However my focus is on X-wing so I've put effort (and money) into getting figures to match my ships' crew. Unfortunately FF imperial assault figures don't have the wide variety of figures required (yet). So I've been investing in WotC Star Wars Miniatures. I haven't decided what rules to use for the boarding skirmishes yet. I sure wish FF would get on board with this idea and make figures for characters like Kyle Katarn, Dash Rendar and assign them stats and special abilities.

I also like to include figures for any upgrade that features a character in the artwork.

You realize this has very little to do with FFG "getting on board" but more to do with the enormous man hours to prepare and balance the game. There's only 2 guys on the skirmish side and 2-3 on the campaign side. There's a reason word dwindled into oblivion, it was horribly unbalanced and was more about pushing cheap plastic faster and faster
