Darth Vader

By Dave Grant, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Quick question (I hope).

I am a little unclear on when damage effects bypass shields, and when it doesn't. I think it has to say "deal a damage" to bypass (ie a Proton bomb), else you don't.

For example Does Darth Vader (crew) bypass shields - he "causes you to suffer one critical damage"? By my logic I think not, but wanted to check.

What about Sabine Wren who also makes you "suffer one damage" - again I think it doesn't bypass shields

Does that mean a K-Wing with Sabine and Proton bomb do one damage that bypasses shields, and one that doesn't???

Thanks

Vader (crew) doesn't bypass shields. If your target still has shields, Vader's "critical damage" will go against them. When you are instructed to "deal a [face down] damage card", that's when shields are bypassed.

Yeah, unless the effect is specifically telling you to deal a card it is just damage and is resolved like any other damage (i.e. It hits shields).

If an effect says to deal a card, then you do that, and it really bypasses the entire damage mechanic.

At the risk of oversimplifying, the key terms are 'Suffer damage' and 'Deal a card'.

If an effect says that you 'suffer damage', it doesn't bypass shields. It doesn't matter if the damage is critical or not.

But if an effect instructs you to 'Deal a card', it bypasses shields.

Examples:

Darth Vader [crew], Ion cannon: You 'suffer damage'. Don't bypass shields. If shield tokens are present, you discard those first.

Proton Bomb, Advanced Homing missile, Wampa: You 'deal a card'. Bypass shields.

I'll show you the dark side [condition]: Mixed newbie-crusher overcomplicated effect. To activate it, your opponent has to 'suffer a critical hit' (that doesn't bypass shields). But once the critical hit is 'suffered' (which would normally remove a shield token if present), the effect activates, and you 'deal a face-up card' instead (which bypasses shield tokens).

This is wrong.

ISYTDS triggers and deals its card *instead* of suffering the critical damage, so it puts the card directly onto the ship, and doesn't touch the shields, same as AHM.

Correct correct.

I already noticed and I was editing it, but ninjas are fast in this forum.

So Vader + Kylo = Pure Evil ???

I had missed this. I see why the fuss over Kylo now.

Thanks interwebz people.

No.

Vader (crew) is not damage from an attack, Kylo only cares about damage from an attack. Vader pilot plus ATC plus Kylo is good though.

Cool - thanks
