FFG Missions...

By LagJanson, in X-Wing

FFG supplied scenarios are a bit hit and miss. How many people have tried them out? I'm looking specifically at trying out Mission 4: Den of Thieves and Mission 20: Patrol Ambush. I'm betting few have tried the latter as it came with the Uwing but it looks like it should work.

ive done a few of the epic ones and starter scenarios. I've also done the three way bounty hunt that I think came with IG-88. Real mixed bag there...

Haven't tried those but Political Escort from the original core is my favorite.

A few we have had to modify cause they seem sometimes a bit one sided

but once the tweaks were made they were pretty fun overall

I liked political escort as well, but it doesn't scale up quite so well... At least, I wouldn't expect 100 point forces to have much trouble splashing the senator's ship.

Just trying to get a handle of which need how much modification. That's exactly the type of feedback I'd like. Ive got most of them, but they've sat I. Storage until yesterday night. :)

The shuttle adds six shields in a 100 point game.

A good rule when playing older missions is to limit yourself to whatever game components were available when they were released, because they aren't future-proofed at all.

True... Some missions really didn't age well. Corvette... I'm looking specifically for those that should still work, assuming a level playing field on the tech race. Just spotted a couple in the TFA box set that should work ok too.

what I'm hoping to do is do surprise missions... So people can't build a list specifically for one mission... Makes people choose between optimizing for one mission or setting up a multi role force to handle anything.

I played the U wing mission against my son and we had fun. Give it a try.

What are you planning to use them for? Tournament? League?

Down the road, tournament. But things need to be tested. Testing takes time. Eliminating known broken missions from the batch allows more testing time for those that have value.

There's more to my plan than just objectives, and the whole thing may fall on its face, but hey... The idea is to make things fun and different.

Actually, I think Political Escort stands up very well to the test of time. The Defender can do the Assist action to give the shuttle an Evade token. There are also a lot of good Rebel ships that add defensive benefits. Esege with Recon Specialist is really good, too. There are a lot of things you can do to defend with the Rebels as defender that have also scaled.

Haha! I did just see this.

Sometimes they aren't even present-proof, I remember trying the Gonzanti campaign with buffed TIE Bombers...well at least it was over quickly.

Oh, I'll be trying Mission 4 this week with J-bot. We will record on Sunday to talk about it. I need to read up on the mission.

Mission four gives me visuals of those old 'puter games where things fall from the sky at your little guy that runs back and forth trying to avoid getting hit...

Cargo containers moving toward the edge of the map as Rebels try to catch them and Imperials try to make sure they get off. It's different! Pay special attention to the special rules - particularly that Steal action.

One oddity - you collect the stolen cargo containers to your ship card... so what if the ship blows up? My assumption is the Rebels still get the point as it's on the card...

Calculations seems like a good upgrade for the pick up ships.

I know this came in the Falcon, but does anyone really want to put the Falcon out there to pick up stuff? I mean, I guess it is pretty big and can get in R1 of the boxes easily enough. It also has a great dial. It is hard to kill.

The Imperials....I'm thinking a blend of enough cheap ships and some decent ones. I like the V1 Prototype for these missions as they have the action economy that is pretty good for not too many points. I wonder about an X1, as well. Throw in a bunch of Tie Fighters, too. I think a Tie Striker is probably a good thing to throw in with the 3 attack dice.

Be sure to post which missions you end up picking after you test so others can try and set up tourney's like this in the future!

Mission 4: Den of Thieves is one of my favorites. I've played it at least 4 times (which is a lot for me). I can't speak to the balance i.e. chances of winning, but it is a lot of fun regardless. I feel there are a lot of options in how you approach the objectives, which makes each game a new adventure. Does the Imperial player try to gun down the smuggler? Do they stay close to their containers to escort them off the board more quickly? Does the Rebel player spend actions buffing attacks, or rely on defenses to weather the storm of Imperial fire as they pick up the cargo? I find it intellectually stimulating.

The 3 player mission with custom squads is actually really good and fun to play when you end up with uneven player numbers on your casual game night.

Calculation only works when attacking

Just played this one out tonight... Modern ships too. Defender x7 is annoying when you can't focus on it because the crates are getting away. That said, we tried it twice and we each got a win without any list changes. Seems balanced too me...
