Playing in the Old Republic

By zhentil, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Has anyone tried this? I would think Edge of the Empire would be a little better at compatibility and all. My friends and i are starting a new campaign and the idea of old Republic came up. Thoughts on this?

easy just reskin and you are done. If you want powerful force users give everyone a lot of XP and it will work fine.

Okay, i see a lot of the same thing but force users are more common place, thoughts if they will eventually come out with a book on the Old Republic?

It's most likely not going to happen since most of the Star Wars product being developed by FFG (probably as contracted by the Mouse) has been mostly centered around the OT and beyond.

None of the Old Republic material is canon anymore, sadly.

Not true.. The Mandalorian wars were just mentioned by Kanan.

Only one specific person from the Mandalorian Wars was mentioned though. It's easy to say that -insert title- War(s) happened -insert number of years- ago without throwing continuity out of whack. The Mandalorian Wars happened but that does not mean Revan, Malak, Meetra Surik, etc exist in Disney's Canon (D-Canon). The Old Republic MMO is just a game, the storyline there has no actual effect on D-Canon. I have seen the supposed deleted scene of Revan speaking with the Son of Mortis but that does not make Revan a part of D-Canon.

The Mandalorian wars were mentioned by Kanan and so they are canon. also the jedi victory is canon. That's the most important thing. I doubt they will come out with a book on The Old Republic but it's so far back that you can easily reskin everything and be done with it for your game.

And really, rpg shouldn't bother with canon since they alter it very easily.

They are constantly bringing in the best of Star Wars Legends into the new Canon. Filoni & crew are big Star Wars fans, and deeply appreciative of the richness of the old EU. That said, I would echo the sentiment that one shouldn't really worry about canon too much.

I GM'd a few Old Republic games (one here on the forums), all of them rather short-lived, but all very enjoyable. I say go for it. If things get sticky, post a message here and you will get help :)

OTOH, FFG does need to continue to keep Disney happy, so they can’t stray too far from Canon.

oh the other thing force users get are mentors... So force powers are a little cheaper.

Devil's advocate - saying that the Mandalorian Wars happened and that the Mandalorians lost to the Jedi isn't the same as saying that the Mandalorians attacked the Republic 4,000 years ago, under manipulation from the Sith Emperor, and were defeated by Republic forces under Revan and Malak who subsequently went dark side and led their own war against the Republic.

I did a short Old Republic campaign, intended to be a one-shot that ran a bit longer and will eventually get revived. Simply reskinning stuff works. I started them at Knight level, to allow for the more powerful force users from that time. It worked well and everybody was having lots of fun - we all played SW:TOR together, so I could draw upon some shared memories and in-jokes.

Which stat block did you used for Sith War Droids ?

For background information search for "Knights of the Old Republic Saga Edition".

For a starting adventure search for "Betrayal of Darth Revan".

You have to convert the stats from Saga to FFG's system. I don't know if a table to convert stats exists. I GMed only one Saga adventure up until now and made the stas up on the fly more or less. My players have a nice shadowport now which they enjoy exploring.

After you can adapt "Dawn of Defiance" which would be a bit of work admittedly. I can't remember if there were more (Saga) adventures playing in that era. A bit of advice though: Saga adventures tend to be very combat heavy: If you, like me, don't like that, you have to come up with some additional encounters (social ones, puzzles etc.).

As of canon restrictions, I could not care less wether or not Disney acknowledges KotOR 1 and 2 and/or TOR as canon. Also I suppose they never touch that topic in the future. On the other hand, I think FFG will never touch that era also. So I think you are free to do whatever you want.

There was some talk here, a while ago, about a Betrayal of Darth Revan conversion. Linked below. I don't think much ever came of it, but it's at least some food for thought. You should probably have a bit of experience in playing Saga Edition if you wanted to convert things, though.
