Second Chance question?

By malcomkitty, in Star Wars: Destiny

In my local group, we were under the impression that Second Chance was removed from play once it was used. Meaning it could not be retrieved from the discard pile. I was wondering if the designer's intent was to put "remove this card from play" instead of "discard this card from play"? Since the discard is an out of play state, it has been brought to my intention it can be targeted by things like Starship Graveyard. Logic tells me the intent was for this was for it to be gone from the game, thus the portion about "from play". If the intent was for it just to be discarded, that extra bit would not be necessary.

The same question could be asked of Thermal Detonator or Infantry Grenades.

From RRG (page 10):

OUT-OF-PLAY
Cards in a player’s hand, deck, and discard pile are out of play
and their abilities cannot be used until they are played.
• A card leaves play when it transitions from the play area to
an out-of-play area.

Discard area IS out of play. Therefore Starship Graveyard can interact with spent Second Chance.

By that "logic" then ATST, Infantry Grenades, Thermal Detonator, Disarm, and Surgical Strike all also remove from game as they all utilize "discard from play". Do you really think think the designer forgot to put "remove from play" on all those cards?

I'm sorry I feel like you're trying to justify a preconceived notion by going for a really convoluted interpretation that requires you to overlook much more consistent interpretations to get there.

If "discard from play" really means remove from game, then why would "discard from hand" not also remove from game?

^ What they said.

It's irritating I know, I've played several games where I've had to Kill Han Solo 3-4 times because my opponent kept managing to claim the battlefield, acquire 3 resources and play that damned card again.

Trick is to get enough damage output that you can trigger 2nd chance and then kill him again in the same turn (late game this is very do-able).

To be fair, the rules do list "out of play" as a specific area or zone (hand, deck, and discard pile), but it's not really what we imagine when we think of something that's been removed from the game. A better question to ask might be "is there a removed from game area?", to which the answer is obvious: no, there is no such thing mentioned in the rule book, notwithstanding the use of confusing nomenclature mentioned above.

First off, I did not say the way it should be or should not be. I asked for a ruling, wondering if it was designer's intent. No I did not think they forgot, but I could see them not wanting to say "remove" as it would have been more confusing as to what happened to dice when they are removed. Obviously, dice removed from play just go back to their character or item card. Therefore, even if they used "remove from play" it could come across as ambiguous. I just did not see the reason for the statement "from play" needing to be there if they only got discarded to the discard pile. Why not say "use (insert) effect then discard"? And yes, I was under the impression all of those items were removed from the game after they were done. Seemed logical. What would happen to a thermal detonator when it gets activated?" Would it be available to be found later on? No it would be destroyed upon use. Thus, it did seem logical that the items were lost. DO no be so snide in the future, btw? I was merely asking for a clarification. I was under the impression that is what this forum is for....

Only problem that I'm seeing is you are applying real world logic to a card game. A game that has its own set of rules. It's always best with FFG games to read what it written and go on that. Don't try to interpret it because that can cause mistakes like these.

Just so you know, it does say in the rules :

• “From play” is short for “from the in play area.”
