Do Big Ships without PtL Benefit from EU?

By StriderZessei, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So lately I've been seeing more people doing a [Lone Wolf/Rey crew variant] Dash/K-Wing bomber setup, but eschewing the EU on Dash to put more toys on the K-Wing.

What do you all think? So big ships like Dash truly benefit from EU if they can only perform one action per turn?

Depends on the ship I would guess. Dash with Trickshot is pretty nice. Stand on a debris and shoot a 5 dice HLC.

Engine Upgrade on a large ship is almost always going to be useful. How useful it is will come down to how much use you'll get out of it. Dash has the barrel-roll action which allows him to control range so not having boost shouldn't be a huge deal for him. With 2 agility, Lone Wolf, and the potential to have two focus tokens per round, Dash doesn't have the same need to stay out of arc that a 0 agility ship like the VX-100 and VT-49 do.

I went 4- at regionals on saturday with an Expertise variant of Fat Han and Jake. Engine upgrade is pretty vital to the list, gets him out of a lot of trouble and if you evade instead he is likely to do be taking more damage than that one token can mitigate. For any large ship with no initiative bid at PS8 or a lower PS i'm not sure that it is worth it

I found EU to be crucial to my Rey build. I've sacraficed rey/Finn bonuses to just boost up and fire out of arc with no return shot on me! I've boosted out of Asajj stress range, I've boosted into rg 2 of Protectorates, I've forced bumps instead of sitting alone with multiple ships in arc, I've thrown 5 dice at a Palp shuttle & Manroo during opening round with a 4 + boost when they did a 1 forward. , I've hard 1 turned then boosted to get out of bad opening placement & I've boosted well amongst asteroids to ensure I had movement and sloop options once the enemy moved in instead of being crowded in

I'm a fan of boost especially on Falcons! It is an extra 3 move which is quite the gap closer!

To answer the question directly...

Yes. If you have other methods of getting the means to modify your dice, then using your action for Engine Upgrade is fine. Rey crew & Lone Wolf get you the focus and reroll to mod your dice, so why not use your action to boost?

The only hangup with any re-position action is that it's an action. As long as you can find ways around that, then the mileage you get out of Engine Upgrade depends only on how often you see it used.

I like this train of thought, because I'm considering running Dash with Countermeasures and Scavenging Crane.

Nevermind, answered my own question.

If Dash is only performing one action then he is not getting Stressed which means he can use the Whites on his dial without worry. Given the huge range of movement options open to the YT-2400, you can often get away without using EU simply by swinging wide.

A large part of it comes down to how well you feel you can fly. EU provide insurance against a lower PS opponent outguessing you. However even without EU, Dash still has his Barrel Roll to fall back on if you find yourself staring down the barrel of a gun.
