StarWars map / Playmat

By Lycia, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I believe this is the best place to share this... saddly i'm limited by the file size and you'll not get the real definition of the picture but here's a little (huge) something i worked on recently.

A full starwars map with (as long as it was available) every official pictures for each planets displayed instead of the simple ugly dots. I did print it on a tarpaulin and it's a fully playable xwing playmat with almost 300 DPI. I use it for both xwing and Edge of the empire.

I did post it on my deviant art account (manaii), however the full display keep crashing most of the time...

the picture is 72 Mo / 10 Mega pixels square. And this is the compressed version...

i guess i can share the file by email if this is allowed on the forums.

You can find more pictures here

http://forum.fumbleasylum.be/index.php?/topic/2003-starwars-carte-galactique/

it's in french (the forum, the map is in english), but i guess the text doesn't really matter :)

@lntrn8

i know what you mean, it was really hard to find a good background picture that fit the star wars galaxy (and i had to change the angle of it), i love the look of the deep core and it's not annoying at all to read the text. I also like the tingle arm which is visible on the map (under the hydian way (red)) and finish by the corporate sector (the real furthest point of the galaxy (at least in pixels, the galaxy rotation help to make it "shorter")).

In fact, i did find only two pictures that fit my needs and this one had the best resolution.

I updated my map and almost forget that i also posted it here

Galaxiev1.6.3

since it's 10 mega pixels square, it's perfectly fine to print it for an xwing playmat or for your rpg (edge of the empire)

just consider that this is the legend map, the current canon map jave only 50 planets or so...

That is amazing!

Thanks you.

This is amazing!!!!

Here's an idea, make one in Aurebesh. Now that's a challenge!

For reference, this map seems to be pretty up to date: http://www.swgalaxymap.com/ Orange marks are canon planets, blue are Legends.

At this point between comics, novels, games, and Rebels, the new canon is well over 50 confirmed planets. Many Legends planets have been brought into canon by a simple passing mention and the assumption that their placement remains the same (there was a tweet from Pablo, I think, a while back about that), so some of the planets on your map may in fact be accurate.

This is actually a nice idea. I'm seriously considering it right now !

Are you suggesting that the rim names and legends should be in aurebesh ? or the hyperspace table and all the names too ? If it's the last, i see why you say it's a challenge !

Note the the compass is partially in aurebesh (i believe it looks nice)

@Shadowzeak

Thanks, i actually used this map a lot in the process, i also talk to it's maker and asked him for the finder tool :-) ( i have no idea if he added because i asked or if he was already working on it, but he send me the link once it was done ).

I used a software i made my self to register every single name i was adding (this is how i know i have 675 planets, it's counting the list for me) and sometime it was warning me that i was adding a name that already existed, with the finder, it allowed me to check quickly where it was and helped me figure out what was the right space for it and when i was remembering a planet i couldn't find on any maps, i was also using it.

However, there's some planets on this map that have only a name, sometime, not even a page on wookieepedia, if i couldn't find a description or an official picture and couldn't even remember the name, i didn't added the planet (some of the planets are already one on the other, i didn't needed a planet that exist only on this map).

The warning is here mostly because i got a question if it was canon or not. But yes, the map is still mostly usable for the canon univers, except it's missing a few ( see the comment of art is self, i believe he managed to list most of them).
Also i might start working on a canon version of the map, but since i'm not reading the books and i won't buy the BluRay of the new movies (except rogue one), i might need people listing the canon planets that does appear on the books, movies and animate.

Anyway, i'll consider doing it if people request it.

@Lycia All words that are in English should be in Aurebesh. So names, routes, tables...everything.

Good luck!:D;)

The question I have, is how do I get one of these for myself?

Gorgeous!

(A small caveat though: all pictured star mats, especially those with lines(!) can be used memorise distances, like if you start your move with the upper right corner of small base ship at planet X, with a 2x3 bank slam you get exactly to planet Y. Not a problem at all in casual play, but such things can be abused by Waac players).

It depends on where you live... if it's in europe, i can print it for you with the same quality as ffg, if anywhere else, it would probably less expensive for you to find a company that can do it for you.

after all, i let the file 100% accesible, so you can get it and use it.

i believe it cost me around 35-40 euro to print it on 2mm thick playmat.

I see what you mean, we can say the same about every details on any map (except empty space map) but the more we have details, the easier it is.

i believe anyone who would use a map for exploiting this lack of fairplay and shouldn't be playing xwing.

I think a lot of people would have to leave then...
