Countdown vs Gunner

By Rinehart, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So Countdown's ability states:

When defending, if you are not stressed during the "Compare Results" step, you may suffer 1 damage to cancel all dice results, if you do, receive 1 stress token.

And Gunner states:

After you perform an attack that does not hit, you may immediately perform a primary weapon attack. You cannot perform another attack this round.

So, if Countdown uses his ability and cancels all results, he is technically not "hit". No damage from dice is actually landed during the attack, instead Countdown cancels the dice and takes a damage card and a stress. So Gunner could process and the attack could make another attack against Countdown, and since Countdown is now stressed from using his ability he wouldn't be able to use his ability on the Gunner attack.

So then is Gunner just a super hard counter to Countdown's ability? Does anyone disagree that this is how it would work? Seems like a weird interaction to me.

Gunner would proc if Countdown uses his ability,as he technically hasn't been hit.

Oh, man, if we could get Wampa as a pilot for something that has a crew slot....

You mean so you could use your Wampa like ability to cancel your attack dice which means the attack misses despite still dealing a damage card? Then because the attack missed you could trigger Gunner for a whole new attack and maybe do it all over again? That would potentially be nasty especially against some of those poor ships which only have two hull to begin with even if they are hiding behind a mountain of shield tokens.

The lesson Gunner would teach Countdown is the same that others have learned over the years; sometime you need to take your terrible tasting medicine to avoid something worse that would follow if you don't.

Yes, precisely. And if it also had more than two attack dice, raising the odds of rolling a [kaboom]? Mwah.

Wanted: Wampa as an Upsilon Shuttle pilot. Willing to pay as much as 93 points.

More dice? Nah, that just means you may need to cancel out hits which would be perfectly reasonable. What you want Wampa to fly is a ship that you can guarantee gets one crit each attack even if that is the only die it rolls. Then you'd never really feel guilty about using that ability.

Granted if you were rolling a 4 die attack that would be a better chance of getting a crit the first go so Wampa could cancel the first attack and let Gunner take another big shot at the target.

Yes, with a Target Lock from the Fire Control System that I left just enough points for in my bid.

Yeah, countdown's ability kinda acts like a double-edged sword. Fortunately you can evade normally and opt for his ability AFTER you failed the save the usual way so you might not need his ability.

Any "When this attack hits" effects dont impact him (except Blount) when he does his ability. The tradeoff is of course Gunner. Gunner/Vader deci is getting more and more common in my area so Countdown is kinda useless.
