Jaina's Light vs Dust Fields

By Undeadguy, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

So this was an interaction that came up.

We ruled it as Jaina's Light cannot shoot through the dust field is not treated as obstructed, but rather the dust field simply does not allow you to shoot through it.

I'm certain this is how to correctly do it, but I did realize that the RRG says if you trace LOS through an obstacle (dust field), the attack is obstructed. But dust fields text overrules it and prevents any attack.

Dust Fields don't obstruct ship attacks - they block them altogether. So there is no obstruction for JL to ignore.

Squadron attacks, however, are obstructed.

Is that what dust fields says? It doesn't obstruct? I know you can't shoot through them.

Yes, "a ship cannot make attacks that trace line of sight across the dust field. Squadron attacks that trace line of sight across the dust field are obstructed." Or close to that.

Now, arguably, any attack that traces LoS across any obstacle, including a dust field, would already be obstructed per that general rule. Nothing here contradicts that, so for ship attacks you have an attack that is obstructed AND blocked entirely, with Jaina's Light not removing the "blocked entirely" part. The squadron rule is just part of the normal obstacle rule, but they included the redundant text in order to clarify, I suppose.

So a Firespray in a Rhymer Ball can attack ships through a Dustfield at medium range, but the ship can't do AA against the Rhymer ball.

Nice, from a certain Imperial point of view.

Bad, from a certain Rebel point of view.

Sadly there is much of that in this game. Rhymer is completely broken at this point.

This particular case is not that much of a deal, the imperial player should be spending a lot of points in that (at least 16 for Rhymer and 18 for each Firespray), to throw only one blue die (for Firespray, as Rhymer won't be able to attack) at medium range to your ship.

And it's true that you won't be able to attack them with a ship, but if you want to counter that you should put squadrons in your fleet
