EPIC setup question

By TBot, in X-Wing

Question for all you Epic players. I've tried playing some home epic games and the 3x3 mat is a little crammed. I know you are suppose to play epic on 6x3 but I don't have enough room in my house for a 6 x 3 table. Also, I've seen some epic games played on a 6 x 3 table and it looks a little odd. Lots of the map doesn't even get used. So my potential solution is to play epic on a 4 x 4 mat. My house can accommodate this size and I think it will be big enough to play some epic matches.

My first question is do you think this is a good idea? My second question is does anyone have a 4x4 mat and/or know where to get one?

Thanks Gang!

4X4 & 4X6 are both much better than the 3x6 game.

I've played on a 6 x 6 and it took forever to close to gunnery range. The 4 x 4 is a good compromise.

You can get some 2x2 boards pretty cheap and use that as a 4x4 mat. Our game store owner air brushed a whole bunch of 2x2's to look great with. We just used painter's tape to make it 3x3 for most games.

4x4 is a solution....but....if you are trying to play a CR-90 that doesn't want to engage, it might get a bit tight. That is one ship that wants to circle the enemy and fire. It does not want to get in the firing range of anything for too long, especially a Raider.

Then again...play with what you have!

Here you go bud. This is inexpensive and feels good to roll dice on, plus it's big enough to cut to 4' x 4' or get two 3' x 3' or one 3'x 3' & one 4' x 3' if you don't mind one side having rounded corners.

That does look good and inexpensive. I don't know if I could go with a non-space themed mat tho :(

Deep Cut Studios do mats in a choice of materials (cloth, PVC or mousepad) and sizes (3x3 3x6 4x4 4x6). Got some cool space mats, and some 4x4 low orbit mats that look just as great!

That's where I'm going to for mine.

My first is going to be the orbital night. It's just so awesome.

I might even try 4x3. The 3-foot width means that it doesn't take as long for ships to close in, and the wider diameter allows you to get more ships in on the action simultaneously. Then maybe I would try 200-point epic matches instead of 300 and see how you do.

I agree, it is sweet Brother!

Could use it for STAW too...

No fair! I tried to upload the picture but couldn't. Watta beauty!

B-E-A-UTIFUL!

Don't play Star Trek, but the gaming mat was designed for Dropfleet Commander. Might pick up a space station kit from that game to put together something for Armada.

4x4 is OK to play 300 pts Epic. In my opinion...

300 pts 4x4

400 pts 5x4

600 pts 6x4

But when you play a BIG game it feels better if you fight to achieve one objective. And sometimes you must play in a non standard surface. L shaped, or T shapped...

Epic is about open mind and playing a game.

I was going to suggest this, too. If a 3'x4' is cheaper, it will serve you well. Alternatively, you could get a 4'x4' and mark off 6" on each player's edge with string or something for cards, tokens, etc. That way you can try 3'x4', and if you feel like the extra depth is needed, you have a 4'x4' to play on. I, personally, feel that 4' between players is a bit too far. Also, remember that in Epic games ships can be placed within range 1-2 of your edge, instead of the standard range 1.
