x-wing with tanks

By shotbyscott, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I just saw a WWII tanks game that is kind of like a basic x-wing style tanks game (no dials) and its called Tanks.

Has any one played it and is it worth getting (ok it is very cheap so worth is a bad word choice)......

Is it fun and does it have a high replay value

I heard it is fun but the tanks must be build and painted, and it uses the Flames of War tank miniatures it's made by Gale Force Nine which is owned by Battlefront. As far as i know some boxes have extra parts to make different versions of that tank and by magnetizing it you might be able to use both versions with one box.

Edit: Beasts of War did a Demo game: http://www.beastsofwar.com/gf9-tanks/play-tanks-phil-yates/

And they have more about Tanks on their site just put Tanks into the search bar.

thanks for the link
was just watching a few youtube vids about it

would like a pre-planed manoeuvre system like x-wing instead of just ini based but it looks fun

I thought it was done in combo with Flames of War? It's kind of like Flames of War light. There were some guys that played FoW where each person just got one tank and called it World of Tanks. It was fun for demo games and such. Then, this game comes out. I'm sure they took the idea from X-wing and went with it (and yes, X-wing isn't the first to do it). It's meant as a gateway drug to harder war games.

As said it is made by Gale Force Nine which is owned by the Battlefront Group and Battlefron Miniatures the makers of Flames of War are also part of the Battlefront Group.

I played it once using my Flames of War tanks and someone's cards. I think X-Wing is a better game as it can be scaled up or down with expansions, epic etc. Tanks is a one trick pony with only armoured vehicles and they don't move around the battlefield as freely as Flames of War. Experienced Flames players I know abandoned it quickly, I lost interest when my aircraft couldn't just plaster the enemy hiding behind a building.

If you try it and enjoy it then you may be able to get painted/modelled tanks second hand at reasonable prices. Especially if Flames version 4 drives people away. In X-Wing terms Shermans/Panzer IVs are as squishy as TIE Fighters and T-34s are more numerous but more like a X-Wing with rookie pilot.

The How to Play part of their website also has a video and here are the rules .

does any one know it there are any squad builder out there like there are for x-wing

Sling Paint did a demo game on their You Tube channel. It looks fantastic.

I play it. It is fun, but the lack of pre-planned actions (dials) does make the end-phase a little tiresome. But it is easy to learn, the models are simple to build and your don't *need* to paint them.

You can build a Panther or Jagdpanther (use magnets) from the starter set and the M4A3 sSherman's have swappable turrets so you can play either the 75 or 76mm variants at will.
