i may be completely misinterpreting this but b/c he just has blue battery he can attack at range 2 (outside black dice AA range) and he will always land at least 1 crit b/c his pilot ability which b/c he also has bomber adds 1 damage to the attack and causes a crit effect
am i missing something?
You are...
And what you are missing is that, by default, squadrons only ever attack at Distance 1 . They do not use their Dice Ranges. This applies to both Anti-squadron and to Bombing.
(Major Rhymer is what changes that up for Bombing. Snipe changes that up for Anti-Squadron)

The answer to both the thread title and your question is yes.
Yes he has bomber, so he always crits, plus whatever you rolled with the die you didn't change. Like an accuracy for a redirect. Or more damage!
Also, yes you missed something. He can't (without Rhymer's help) fire beyond distance 1 at ships. So he'll still be at black range.

This misunderstanding made me wonder how the game would play if squads did fire at the range of their dice color. This would
DEFINITELY
open-up the map clutter, elevating all of my issues with squadron play. The new red-dice Squads would be BRUTAL against ships, but this maybe would be okay, assuming anti-squad fire could fire at the same color-ranges. Hmmm, interesting......I think I like this!
My favorite part of Rhymer, other than using him, is how much he frees up the squad and ship clutter on the map.

When ships fire on squadrons, they do fire at color ranges. That's why the idea of a red anti-squadron die on ships is so fascinating and/or terrifying. There's a thread on it somewhere. Quite interesting.
