By JOHN BOND, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just bought the game and love it, I am a newbie and need help with the following questions

cheers John.

target lock

1) Target Lock occurs with enemy ships within the 3 band range, My question is can a enemy ship that has a target lock, remove that target lock by moving further away from the 3 band range from the targeting ship?

2)Does is stay for the rest of the game till the enemy ship is destroyed or the targeting ship is destroyed or changes its lock onto another ship? 3)If the targeting ship choices to change its lock from one to another ship does its have to spend a action?

3)If the targeting ship choices to change its lock from one to another ship does its have to spend a action? cheers

No - The target lock stays on the ship until either ship is destroyed, or the attacker chooses to lock onto a different ship (there are other game effects that remove it but just getting out of range isn't one of them)

2)Does is stay for the rest of the game till the enemy ship is destroyed or the targeting ship is destroyed or changes its lock onto another ship? 3)If the targeting ship choices to change its lock from one to another ship does its have to spend a action?

See above. Generally speaking you do need to use an action to do target lock and that removes the lock from the original ship and moves it to the new target.

3)If the targeting ship choices to change its lock from one to another ship does its have to spend a action? cheers

See Above - Yes.

Using it to reroll attack dice remove the target lock by the way... but if you never use it, yes it stay for all the game... I've had target lock stay all the game and never get used for whatever weird reason...

A few general things that new people get confused about.

Spending a token is not the same as an action. So even if you can't perform an action you can still use a Focus or Target Lock token you have.

Receiving a token is also not always the same thing as an action. If an upgrade says something like "give the target a Focus token" you can still do that even if the target is stressed.

Yeah this is important to understand.

In particular with Target Locks, the System upgrade 'Fire Control System' allows you to just gain a TL on the target you've just shot. Including, for instance, if you don't have the Target Lock action normally available to you.

It's legal for ANY ship to hold a blue TL token, but for some, not easy to contrive a way to get it to them...

And when a card instructs a ship to "acquire a Target Lock" that's not the same thing as performing the "Acquire a Target Lock" action, although it follows the same rules about how you actually carry it out (enemy ships at Range 1-3 only). The differences between "acquire a Target Lock" and performing the action of the same name:

  • You don't need the Target Lock icon in your action bar to acquire and maintain a Target Lock if the acquisition is granted by some other card or ability. This is why so many TIE Phantoms have Fire Control Systems, despite not having the Target Lock action icon.
  • If something instructs you to acquire a Target Lock, you can do so even while stressed, because it's not an action. Not being an action also means it can't trigger effects that trigger on action performance, like Push the Limit.

1. NO! There are ways for ships to acquire TLs on ships further than R3 away so if a ship could just move beyond R3 to cause the TL to "fall off" that would defeat the purpose.

2. Yes. Once a ship acquires a TL token the ways to get rid of it are generally spend it, destroy a ship on either end of the TL, or the ship that acquired the TL needs to do something that would cause it to acquire a TL on a different ship as most ships can not have more than one ship TLed at a given time. There are a few other ways to shake off a TL token but those are ship/upgrade specific.

3. Sometimes. Using an Action to take the Target Lock action would cause a ship to acquire a TL on a new ship which moves it from the old ship to the new ship. There are other ways to acquire a Target Lock (Fire Control System being the biggest example) which do NOT require an action but they are still getting a new TL to replace the old one.

Thanks guys for your help

cheers John
