Brath's Birds of Prey [Empire]

By BleakSquadron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

As a note, this list probably isn't competitive (it would be too vulnerable to turrets), but it is so much fun to fly.

Rexler Brath (46)

-Expertise

-Tie/D

-Tractor Beam

-Engine Upgrade

Duchess (28)

-Predator

-Adaptive Ailerons

- Lightweight Frame

Pure Sabacc (25)

- Veteran Instincts

-Adaptive Ailerons

-Lightweight Frame

99/100 points

Brath with an Engine Upgrade can fly a formation with the strikers. He paints a target with the tractor beam and his primary fire. The two strikers light up his target. A good set of rolls deals with most soft targets and a awesome set of rolls deal with any target. Afterward the formation can split up if it needs to, all of these ships are excellent at keeping their firing arc in the fight. The squad is definitely vulnerable to (ps 9+) turrets as there aren't any autothrusters here. Having everyone at ps 8 is very nice versus current meta lists (higher skill than the most used defenders). I still doubt I would take this to a competitive event, but it has been massively fun to fool around with. Give it a shot sometime, fly casual.

Twin Ion Engine Mk. II on Brath should be considered to benefit Expertise.

I'm not sure a ship with a green 5-straight and white 4-k needs Engine Upgrade. Plus, that'd free up your action for Focus to trigger his ability (kind of a gimme...) AND 3 points for something else.

Also, I'll throw in the obligatory: Tie/x7 is superior to Tie/D and would free up 2 more points (but you don't really need those points)

I absolutely agree that this is the inferior (but more fun) title. The only real reason for the engine upgrade is to emulate the strikers movement since I like formation flying. Mk 2 engines is absolutely a consideration for any expertise defender though. All great points as always.

Edit: Spelling is hard.

I want to play this list now...

It actually inspired me to order another Striker

One of my favorite things with this squad is how they move, say you plan a 3 bank with the strikers - they "boost" forward one and then bank - follow that with Brath doing a 3 forward and then boosting in the same direction. It just feels so much different to the normal maneuvering game. Especially when you start doing s-loops and k-turns. The first time I played this squad was against 2 arcs and 2 z's.. The enemy ships were so outclassed in maneuvering that with liberal application of tractor tokens I was shot at 2 times by the time I had destroyed 2 z95 and 1 and 1/2 arcs (Higher ps ships throwing ships on rocks is so mean).

It's very interesting and quite similar to what I've been trying out, to get used to the Striker (loved that ship).

Also, great to see some TIE/D love. I'm also a D enthusiast, even if I know the x7 might have been a "better" option. :)

The crazy thing to me is how good /D is. Don't get me wrong I know /X7 is better but that just shows how much the defender needs evade tokens and a price drop, cause the control afforded by ion cannons and tractor beams on /D's is incredible.

I don't have the bottle to play Ds... I just think of then as a hit magnet! I suppose with this Rexler you're going to cause a lot of damage before they can hit back though. :)

They are definitely a hit magnet, but the question to the opponent is who do you shoot first here? Brath or Pure Sabacc? Just a little damage to sabacc reduces the lists damage output, but doesn't effect the control element at all. It's nice because it feels obvious to shoot Rexler first every time, but between the control of your enemies arc with a tractor beam and the promise of a 4-5 die attack from sabacc it isn't so easy when you're flying against it to make that decision.
