Bantha Poodoo: Critique My List

By ThatJakeGuy, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Can everyone do me a favor and rip this list to shreds. I think I've come up with the ideal mix of raw aggression with a dash of objective play with Gamorreans, but I would like second opinions on my Command Deck and unit choices.

Double Bantha 2.1 (15/15/40)
==========================
[9] Bantha Rider
[9] Bantha Rider
[8] Elite Gamorrean Guard
[7] Elite Weequay Pirate
[1] Temporary Alliance
[3] Gideon Argus
[2] C-3PO
[1] Beast Tamer

-------------------

[3] Crush
[2] Jundland Terror
[2] Jundland Terror
[2] Grisly Contest
[2] Tools for the Job
[1] Ferocity
[1] Survival Instincts
[1] Negation
[1] Tough Luck
[0] Take Initiative
[0] Wild Attack
[0] Planning
[0] Element of Surprise
[0] Opportunistic
[0] Positioning Advantage

Does tools for the job only work on the weequays?

Would parting blow be a good card to use? Since it'll work off the piggies and the banthas? Those are units people are likely to be backing away from. Free attacks.

Looks good. 2 Banthas for dive bombing your opponent and hitting their back line figures like Sorin, HKs, Jabba, or Leia.

What are the top 3 deployment cards you would not want to face with this list?

JLuke? Figures with Stun (Stunned bantha is a sad bantha)? something else?

I'd probably have to say Jedi Luke, Sorin, and Rancor. Rancor since in the hallways it's movement intensive to get through him and you cannot use your Bantha to get past his Rancor. Of course, your Banthas make excellent, excellent shields against the Rancor.

You may have trouble with Rebel lists. Neither Jedi Luke nor Obi-Wan cares about Hidden, and they mostly don't care about black dice. Luke will take two swings to kill your Gams (maybe, just maybe, he may take three, but that is unlikely), so cover them with your Weequays (if he doesn't run in and kill them first). If he's not focused, he'll probably take two swings to kill your Pirates as well. Focused Kenobi can one hit kill your Gammoreans.

Your list May be a little melee heavy, which forces you to move up into the fray and into the sights of quite a few figures. I might suggest not rushing in with the Banthas, but waiting until both of them and the Gammoreans can get there all together.

The top 3 lists/units I fear are:

Jedi Luke, who can singlehandedly kill a Bantha while being difficult to kill.

Sorin. While easy to annihilate, until I do kill him I have to deal with insane amounts of stun from his cronies.

Double Bantha, Double Rancor, or Bantha/Rancor: Against any one massive opponent, it is very easy to block it away from my vulnerable, squishy units with one Bantha while the other attacks his rear lines or lies in wait/takes objectives for the end of the Titanic conflict and then dives in. However, against 2+ massive units, we are stuck in a stalemate until at least 2 of the 4 of them die, and that contest would be decided more by dice than anything. It also prevents me from getting into his rear to wreak havoc, which is where I want to be.

Jinx. I owe you a soda!

What is your strategy for the Dianoga mission? Do you ignore it or do you try to get a few points off of it?

Wouldn't Jabba be better than Gideon/C3P0? You lose one initial focus, but after that Jabba can help you draw more cards (Jundland Terror!!!) or in a pinch order a hit. On top of that your list that already eats trooper lists for breakfeast gets an extra point for each kill..

In version 1.2 with HKs, I would throw a few shots at the Dianoga but I would usually send the Banthas up the doored hall to mess with the enemies rear line as they tried to get Dianoga points.

In this version, it depends on the matchup. Twins are capable of soloing the Dianoga, so I would focus on preventing that outcome by sending a Bantha into the compacter to block access and do damage while my Weequay take a few shots at the Dianoga to secure some if not all of the points.

Against Sorin, Troopers, or other short range lists capable of minor damage to the beast, I would use the Dianoga as bait. If they commit resources to the Dianoga, I would let them have a few shots, and in doing so they will begin to stack up outside their door. I then rush my first Bantha into their midst and wreak havoc while my Weequay clean up the Dianoga and get the 5 VP bonus while ePigs go for terminals and start moving in to back up the first Bantha. Second Bantha hangs back for support.

If they ignore the Dianoga, then so will I. I'm confident in most matchups that I can win a straight up fight to the death.

Definitely worth considering! The biggest loss to my list in that case is the ability to use Gideon to move the Bantha, which is vital to my opening moves on several scenarios. However, more Command Cards is always a boon with this specific set of dudes. Maybe I could drop Threepio and the Gamorreans for Jabba and Greedo. I lose a combat unit, but gain more range and access to Jabba's schemes. I might give that a try at my next test.

Someone needs to do artwork depicting a Tusken on a bucking Bantha, hand up in the air, looking for those 8-seconds. Bantha's have suddenly become wild, agile, leaping beasts, as opposed to the slow pack animals they were in the film.

I am curious - why 2 Banthas and not a mix of Bantha + Rancor? Is it the speed increase of the Bantha over Rancor or other considerations like the fact Jundland isn't compatible with the Rancor, or the 1 point cost difference?

A combination of the facts that Bantha are faster, I needed that 1 point elsewhere, 90% of a Bantha's damage is unmitigated, Bantha don't need training or taming to play objectives, and Rancor die too fast if they aren't trained, which far reduces their AoE damage.

Also, I have more experience with the Double Bantha, going back to Worlds.

I've played a bunch of games with the Rancor and don't really rate it anymore. It's cool but it's expensive and impossible to hide. Probably lasts about the same as a bantha if he's being attacked by the right things but doesn't have the same burst of damage output.
