Claim Your Objective preview

Among all of the news articles we've seen, this one has me the most excited about the game. The objective and deployment system means not every game is just about destroying units. Positioning can be very important as well. I imagine some objectives will require you to hold territory. The objective system makes this system seem like a big improvement over X-Wing. I really like what I'm seeing!

I agree, the objectives was the part I enjoyed most about Battlelore, although I like the option to go for a complete massacre when I can.

Good point. Seems like this system will be able to do both.

Yeah I am excited to look into what kind of lists we can build to make objective vs. massacre armies...I WANT TO SEE EVERYTHING!!! Also I look forward to games that are more objective based, since most games I've played have objectives but they always just seem to fall to the wayside to massacre.

the more I read, the more i am hyped by this game. Well, at least I'd like to read the full rules once before ordering anything. that common stuff said,
I really hope they will give us far more diverse objectives to complete than only go joyfully to the butchery. I can foresee the convoying mission, the defense mission, the take-that-f*c*n*-tower and hold it till the end of the eighth round or less, evacuation mission( say one of your hero or units are already get caught in an ambush and you have to open an escape route for them), in the same type of craziness : have all your units flee the battlefield before the golems and dragons who are chasing you do catch you while slaloming between divisions of undeads who block the exit point... ... oh well I go back to sleep...Zzzz

Yeah I'm hopping that it is a rather substantial amount of objectives for they handle it similar to how Imperial Assault adds skirmish missions each upgrade could add a new objective card.

The more I see, the more it feels like an updated Armada. That's not a bad thing!

Only problem I have so far is that I don't like drawing the objectives and deployments randomly. I wish you chose a couple during list building like in armada. Not a big deal, just a minor dislike. Also, could change in the tourney rules once those come out.

Actually I was disappointed by this one, the objectives seem to encourage, "just kill each other"

Look at the one that's all about get flank charges, how's that not also just going to win you the game, as if you can pull off a flank charge or two, you're unlikely to lose.

It would surprise me if they don't have more tactical or control style objective also. Or they handle this like most other mini games where you have a game type and these are just like bonus objectives. Regardless based on how many objectives came with Armada I'm sure you will not always have combat oriented objectives.

At this point am 50/50 of what I have seen of the game so far, but am still interested and probably get a copy of the game even tho I might not play it.

Do like that both players can be playing for different objectives for the win, need to wait and see what the magic system is like

I think it's great for pick up games, and also encourages different builds. If the objectives keep the games fresh and also keeps there from always being obvious list choices I'll take it. Some units might be great but struggle if certain objectives are drawn and I'm totally fine with that. I do hope they don't all focus on things that are already good for you to do though, like flanking. The best objectives or narratives are those that lead you to do things differently than just annihilating the other army in the most efficient way possible which is already a goal anyway. Not really enough info to know either way.

this article really highlights for me what they are going for with this game though. They are trying to find that sweet spot between all consuming, 3 hour, lifestyle games like WFB was and the more casual "gamer" that might be interested in but just not willing or able to go all in on something 40k from GW. We'll see! They either get it right and you pull people from both ends into it and have a successful game or both sides give it a pass because it doesn't satisfy anyone. Hoping it's popular though because I'm digging the vision for it so far.
