GSD-IIs

By Eggzavier, in Star Wars: Armada

Anecdote incoming (not backed up by verifiable peer-reviewed data. Yet.):

In my CC, I am playing an Imperial fleet, and included a Gladiator-II in my list for many reasons, chiefly amongst them being:

- I have this awesome alt-art card that I hardly ever use

- I'm running Jonas

- I wanted two ships with 2Blue AS dice (also have an ISD-II)

I just want to say, it has been working fantastically every game.

My primary opponent has been bringing and updating a Biggsball over the course of the rounds that we have played, and yesterday the blue dice were rolling hot for me.

I think his comp now is:

- Biggs

- Jan

- Wedge

- 5 vanilla X-Wings

I got the entire ball in an arc yesterday and rolled double damage on each AS shot. That's a lot of damage for the BB to deal with. Several turns of withering AS fire from one or both of my 2blue rollers made the squadrons relatively easy picking for my Squad force of:

- Zertek Strom

- Bossk

- Jonas

- 2x Defender

- Jumpmaster

- Lambda

The first round of the campaign, Jonus let me accuracy out the brace on an MC80 for 2 double arcing shots of an ISD and the Glad with APTs, plus a follow up long range DTT shot from my Arq.

It was pretty nuts.

At any rate, just wanted to share the awesomeness that is the GSD-II with everyone, especially with Jonas.

Demo in an antisquad role just won the boston regionals. Definetely a thing nowadays. Gonna run it like that in my CC.

My GSD-II is indeed a Demo, though I didn't add it until Round 2.

I thought APTs, backed up by Jonas, was a better first round buy.

Demo as a squad blower upper is quite good! =)

However, is there a use for a GSD2 that ins't Demo?

Also, two damage per roll is like cheats face level good luck lol.

Average damage for 2 blue dice is 2 x 4/8 = 1 avg dmg.

For sure, the amount of damage I rolled was quite absurd, especially on that one attack.

We were kind of joking about it too, because he rolled 4 accuracies with a vanilla x-wing and 6 accuracies/crit icons with Wedge that same round for no effects at all.

So, I mean, that helps.

However, I think that the double shots help quite a bit also, and since in the campaign my ISD also has leading shots I think they can be quite potent if your opponent masses their squads, which with the overlapping bubbles nowadays seems to be standard fare.

I do actually think that GSD-IIs have a place in the game without Demo, especially with Jonas. I mean, if you have the points for Demo, you should probably take Demo because it's **** good, but I have also used lightly upgraded Glads as pocket carriers, and I don't see any reason why they wouldn't fit the same archetype as an MC-30, though not as potent and slightly more survivable as vanilla ships.

I've even used Insidious on occasion, and it makes a fantastic chaser with ETs and speed 3.

I love Gladiators as pocket carriers. That's my pet "crap" "skew" list. Its bad, but its sooo fun!

Hoever, I disagree with you on Insidious haha. Never ever have seen it be useful.

Also sadly, GSD2s are expensive. =/. And they benefit well from upgrades.

Re: Insidious...you really have to want to make it work.

This sounds like a challenge. I'll make it work right after I figure out a dual ISD list.

I'm thinking Hyper Space Assault with Strategic would help.

HSA with Insidious is one good way for it to work. The trick is getting your opponent to pick that one haha.

I was using it nicely with a MSU list for a while when Most Wanted was in its heyday. I usually had activation advantage / first player so I just charged insidious wherever their objective ship went.

Some foolish people didn't put it on their flotillas. Gobble gobble gobble.

I love insidious. HA is nasty with him, and it often helps you get one last side arc volley off into the rear of the enemy when you pass after your attack run

There is a combination idea I have with Vader doing re-roll duty with Sensor Teams in the weapons slot. If you're packing APTs, you're not tried to get damage out as much. GSD-IIs are unique in this by being able to get that accuracy out of the one red.

Advanced Gunnery, HSA, and Solar Corona/Superior Positions seem good for an Insidious Demo list with an ISD or Vic. You can threaten Advanced Gunnery with the ISD or Vic, or Insidious if you feel bold. Superior is a perfect match for it. Black at long range and you get a VP. I think Jerry could bring Insidious back because you can sprint at speed 3 and quickly whip your front arc around to get the rear shot.

With the new objective choices, you could very easily force a harder decision that could make Insidious work well, or force HA, whatever.

If you can get the dice manipulation to find that accuracy I think GSD-IIs are a pretty awesome little package.

Like you said, not quite for the damage but more for the battering effects of APT/ACM (I've seen ACM making a comeback in a few campaign games I've been playing/watching too).

We're doing a Vassal campaign and I have been running 3 Glad-II's a Raider-I with a Rhymerball.

Escorts? That's what those glorious hunks of metal over there (and there and there and there) are for.

It's not wrecking face, but try flying it in a Show of Force. It was magical. My opponent was better and with a better list, but the stations were essentially doomed in 2 turns. I'm a novice with Imperials hardware, but this list is fun to run with.

As mentioned above a Glad2 with Sensor Teams & APT's is affordable and generally reliable.

GSD-IIs are great...if only I could stop rolling rubbish on blue anti-squadron! :D

Hyperspace assault can backfire pretty spectacularly now with the advent of strategic.

I love my AA demo, been a favourite of mine for about a year.

Especially with Screed as your Admiral...

I've been playing a Screed list with Jonas....and I run 2 Glad II's and an Imp 2. One Glad is Demo and one is Insidious. Place them with the Imp in the middle and the glads facing away ( think a \ l / shape) and swing the glads to meet near the middle. they face demo, great. black dice in the rear. they face insidious, great. demo in the rear. they face the imp, great. speed 3 insidious in the rear with demo alongside).

Enjoy using your accuracy to push your one black die through, since that's all that's left :P

Even if I rolled that bad...it's STILL an APT....

Depends on the die roll. You don't HAVE to use Jonas' ability for the accuracy. And you can take a red die instead of a black one.
