Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (Eventual Spoilers)

By warchild1x, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hell. The reason why Han was frozen in carbonite at the end of ESB was because Lucas wasn't sure if he could count on Harrison Ford coming back for the third movie.

Nah... it's just certain threads bring out the worst in people. Did you see the posts last year about Rey's identity? They were much worse than anything this thread has seen yet.

Definitely some interesting (and welcome) news. It will be interesting to see what they do to incorporate her into the final movie.

I'd imagine the juggle the storyline so scenes she did for 8 are shown in 9 instead.

First trailer:

My initial reaction? "Meh". My problem is that E7 was just so terrible. Like 8th in the list of Star Wars movies (or 10th, if you include the two Ewok movies and the Holiday Special) terrible, so I’m really having a very hard time getting amped up for the new one.

And as a long time Star Wars fan since I was 8 back in 77, this is a very weird place for me to be.

Really?!? Granted I was only 6 in '77, so maybe your additional 2 years of wisdom yield something I have yet to learn.

Yeah, I was not thrilled with E7 - we'll put it this way, the DVD has been sitting on my shelf since release day and I haven't even bothered opening it (I'm on my 3rd R1 viewing at home, for comparison).

Putting aside charges of "it's just a remake of E4", I thought the soundtrack was weak, I thought the characters were just not that interesting - Ren is not a credible threat at all - and I just don't like Abrams as a director. He's never done anything of value. And then you add in the issue of the movie being The Remix Awakens, and yeah - it's at the bottom of the Star Wars pile for me.

I guess the only thing going for E8 is that JJ isn't behind the lens. But I am way more interested in Guardians 2, Thor 3 and Planet of the Apes this year.

He has ... just not outside of TV. He's a great producer and director for TV series. Sucks at movies. But the real fault is with the piss-poor writers for TFA. I have to wonder how much control JJ had over who was writing and what they wrote. Though I suppose that JJ can be blamed, since it was his responsibility to spot bad scripting and have it changed.

There were more new spaceships in this recent trailer than all of The Force Awakens. All I want is spaceships! YAY

I just hope its not "Episode 8 ESB greatest hits".

I felt TFA was ANH+ROTJ and that it was definitely inferior to the OT. PT however is pretty hard to top in poopiness.

I didn't dislike TFA, as I really liked the new characters, but it more or less cemented JJ Abrams as mediocre at best.

I have no reference for Rian Johnson's work, but it seems he's well-regarded.

Looper is awesome, and so was his breakout film, Brick. He's a fantastic writer, and he mentioned in the panel he worked on the script with Carrie Fisher.

I loved TFA, but Rian Johnson is a way better writer/director than Abrams, so I'm looking forward to this.

You may need to rewatch TFA. TFA had...

  • newer model Imperial SD
  • newer model Imperial TIE
  • new Imperial assault shuttle
  • new Imperial VIP shuttle
  • newer model X-wing
  • new Rebel troop shuttle
  • new light freighter (the one that gets blown up on Jakku)
  • new medium freighter (the one that Han was using)

I thought that JJ had his hands all over the script/story too?

Art is subjective. The Force Awakens entertained me and I have rewatched it both at the theater and at home, faults and all. Any of my disappointments with any of the Star Wars movies stem more from my own expectations than anything else. This is especially true for the prequel trilogy. I look forward to The Last Jedi and will try to keep my expectations minimal as I usually do. It does, by way of the trailer, look to be darker, much like ESB was. Nothing quite compares with that initial wide-eyed wonder I had back in 77 as a 10 year old boy, so while I always look forward to new movies, the first will always be my favorite.

Yeah, he cowrote with Lawrence Kasden. Michael Arndt did a really early draft of the script, and Lucas provided the initial outline.

He likely did (I didn't pay attention to the credits). Which explains why the movie sucked. JJ also has a tendency towards shallow bad guys with cliched behavior patterns.

See, I really like Kylo, he's interesting and different. And basically canon Jacen Solo, which is what I really wanted the sequels to be about.

I liked the film though.

I thought TFA was a decent starting point for a new trilogy, but based solely on the trailers I the The Last Jedi (TLJ?) looks better than TFA.

Is anyone going to talk about "... it's time for the Jedi to end." does it mean that Luke really thinks that, or is he just depressed after Kylo destroyed most of the new Jedi?

Hey it's another "Did TFA suck or not" thread!

We haven't had one of those in a few days.

*gets popcorn*

Not really. He's a minor variation on the whiny, angry brat theme we saw with Anakin in AotC. Only with even worse acting. Hard as that may be to believe possible.
