[fundraiser] Help us get the World Champion back to Worlds in 2017!

By jesper_h, in X-Wing

Hello everyone! I've been punting this around on Facebook and wanted to share it with you here, as well. We here in London have started a fundraiser to help get Nand Torfs, the current World Champion and first winner from outside of the USA, back to Minnesota to defend his title in May.

Flights from Europe are pretty steep and it would be a massive shame if he was forced to sell his prizes in order to make the trip. FFG have stated that from 2017 onwards, they will be sponsoring travel for all returning world champions - but the 2016 winners will miss out. Let's make sure Nand gets there!

Here's our Generosity (via Indiegogo) fundraising page.

Bump for publicity. Nand is an awesome player!

Good News

$1,000 USD raised by 33 people in 15 hours

:D

Wow, that's crazy.

Wow! It's only been 13 15 hours and we reached the target already! I want to personally thank everybody who donated to or shared this fundraiser.

The generosity, camaraderie and friendly attitude of the X-Wing Miniatures community continues to blow me away. I'm so proud to be a part of it. You guys are incredible.

I will catch up with Nand later today and start organising the transfer of funds to him, so that he can start making arrangements for travel and accommodation as soon as possible.

That's amazing! I'm impressed by the generosity of this community.

Going somewhat off topic, it makes me wonder if I should have tried something similar to go to worlds last November, because I won the national tournament of a country in which I don't reside and the paid trip went to the best-ranked resident. I'll keep this in mind if I'm fortunate enough to hang onto my title.

Naaa the Europeans just want to keep the title away from the USA :)

Tournament organisers at premier-level events should absolutely not be doing that. You should contact FFG's Organised Play department ([email protected]) and let them know.

Lol. A part of me agrees with the sentiment as my family is European but another part is saying "what's wrong with it staying in the US?" as I was born in the US.

I did send an email in September (I think) asking about it and never got a reply, but as I knew that I wouldn't get the trip as it was in the published tournament rules before attending, I didn't exactly push either.

This isn't really the right thread for it, but anyway: the organisers of the Poland Nationals last year tried pulling that stunt too. This is not permitted. Tournament organisers can't just change the tournament rules for premier events as they see fit. If the regional distributor (who usually sponsor the travel) are complicit as well, not just the organisers, then FFG/Asmodee need to be made aware.

Like I said, I emailed them last September and never heard back. Then again, at the time I wasn't aware that it was against FFG/Asmodee rules and directed the focus of my message elsewhere. I'll definitely be following up on this now, even if it's late. If you don't mind I'll PM you later and we can avoid derailing the thread further.
