Character Creation.

By Zakain, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So making a character, Select Species, Get Career and spec. Now when you get the career you gain x number of Career skills. When you get them, do gain 1 rank in them correct? When you select your spec skills do you also gain 1 rank in those too? Can they double up?

So Hired Gun Merc Commander I could essentially start with 2 in my ranged Heavy by taking the skills from both sets? Or would I have to choose two different skills.

Yes they can double up. But no skill can go above rank 2 at character creation so other ways on raising a skill can't be applied to that as well.

You'd get four free ranks for the base career skills and then two more when you take the spec.

To clarify, you get 2 skill ranks free from the first specialization. You get no additional free ranks from a second spec, only additional (if any) career skills and access to another spec tree. Generally speaking, you are better off using starting (initial character build) XP on improving attributes than picking up an extra spec. Skills and talents (and specs) can be acquired after the game begins, but the only way to improve an attribute after the game starts is by getting the Dedication talent (or installing certain cybernetics for +1 Int, +1 Brn, or +1 Agl).

Ok another question. Do I get all the career skills and its only a 4 i get to add a rank to or do I only get 4 and thats where the ranks go?

Every skill listed in the career and spec(s) becomes a "career" skill, and thus cheaper to increase. You can pick up to 4 of the career skills to add 1 rank to, and 2 of the first spec's skills to add a rank to. For most species, you cannot exceed 2 ranks in any one skill before play begins (assuming characters with zero earned XP).

One thing to bear in mind about the FFG system is that there is no such thing as being "unskilled". There are career skills, and non-career skills, but having zero ranks in a skill doesn't mean that the character is incapable of applying that skill. It just means that they lack specific training/experience in that area. The character still gets to apply the base attribute dice that governs that skill. Having ranks means the character is better at it and can upgrade one ability die (green, 8-sided) into one proficiency die (yellow, 12-sided) per skill rank.

Ok geez I've been playing super wrong for a long time, thanks for the clarification.

You're very welcome. I highly recommend that you download and start using Oggdude's FFG SWRPG character generator. Once you've used it for a bit you'll understand much better how the character creation process works, at least the portions dealing with careers, specifications, talents, and skills. It also helps a lot with gear and related encumbrance tracking.
