A couple of questions about expansions.

By WWHSD, in Imperial Assault Campaign

I've got a bunch of Imperial Assault expansions that I bought for skirmish components but I have only ever played through the introduction mission in the campaign. I've recently gotten Descent and have been playing it with my daughter. She's having a blast. We're thinking about digging out all of the campaign stuff and giving it a go.

When picking heroes, should I have the players select from all of the heroes that I have available or should I limit it to just the ones that come with the campaign that we are playing?

My understanding is that each expansion is a self contained campaign and they are not played sequentially with the same characters. I've got the core set, Hoth, Bespin, and Twin Shadows. Is there core campaign the best place to start or are one of the other campaigns better to start with?

The core campaign progresses in a way that lets you learn the rules... it has also the simpler objectives and maps and map events. The other campaigns tend to become more complex, so the core would be a good place to start.

While each campaign is completely standalone, you combine all other items - Imperial classes, heroes, deployment cards, side missions, Agendas, Items, Supply cards, etc.

Note that only the Core, Hoth and Jabba's Realm are true campaigns. Twin Shadows and Bespin actually just add side missions, heroes and agendas you can use in the other campaigns. The idea of the Mini Campaigns is a way to play the new side missions they include and you get a little story out of it, without waiting for them to randomly show up in the other campaigns - so your mileage may vary as to whether you want to play them or not (my players didn't enjoy Twin Shadows and are reluctant to play Bespin, feeling that they are too short and the skill progression is too fast).

Also note that you can only play a minimum of two heroes, it doesn't work with one. So the Rebel player will have to control and keep track of at least 2 players. Again, mileage may vary, many folks will suggest to play with 4, but that can be a bit much for one player. Maybe try 3, if the group is strong, you have an advantage with the one extra activation, when you're trying to race to the objectives.

Bear in mind that Imperial Assault is more about completing objectives and less about killing the baddies, many missions have time limits, unlike Descent.

The care campaign happens straight after the end of A New Hope, its big and it's fun to play, when we started the campaign, the player's picked the character's from the core set (can't remember if I had any of the expansion's then) but I don't see why not let the player's select a character from any of the expansion's if that's what they what to play, all seem balanced.

At the same tune you could select any of the villain's from the expansion's too.

You could play the first campaign using only core set components to keep it simple... And then when you replay it in the future, you have that option of combining other classes and heroes. If you do combine everything, you will probably want to peak at all the rule books, including the expansions, and the FAQ, as each adds additional points as new abilities or game effects became available.

Definitely start with the core, that is where all games should start as it's best to learn the rules and the ins and outs before you start adding more conditions, more complex weapons, characters, enemies etc..

I'd leave all the extra stuff out and just play through the core once, then start adding in as you go.

Add everything in, it's all designed to be incorporated into the core campaign. No reason not to use the stuff you paid money for.

In fact a lot the expansion stuff was designed to fix problems with the core campaign.

Pick whatever heroes you like. Each hero has their own Red side mission that is added to the side mission deck when they are chosen- so, no matter who you choose, they'll feel in place.
