X-Wing Starter Set Question

By Eye of Thokem, in X-Wing

That glorious day will soon be upon me. After paying off my credit card debt yesterday, I'll be able to start buying some FFG Star Wars. So here's the question:

Does the Original X-Wing Starter Set now have the updated rules and damage deck, or do I need The Force Awakens Starter Set to get them?

The Force Awakens set has the new damage deck, but the old one is still tournament legal.

Edit: the updated rules are in the TFA set, but you can download them. I'd go for the one with the pilots and models you like the most.

Thanks Lingula!

Was reading about The Force Awakens Starter and it said it didn't replace the original, then went on to describe all the rules updates and damage deck changes so wasn't sure.

You can get the most up to date rules and FAQ for free from FFG. The old starter has a different set of damage cards that as far as I know are still tournament legal.

Buy which ever one you like but know this: you will not only buy that.

Edit: welcome to the game!

Once you start down the X-Wing path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will.

It's a good idea to get both, of course. And then all the shipses, precious!

Getting both is a good idea, for Rebel players at least. Rebels get Biggs Darklighter and R2-D2 from the Original Core Set (both considered vital components for a lot of builds), and receive PS8 Poe Dameron and BB-8 from the TFA Core Set. If you're going to go Rebels, it would probably be wise to pick up both. Thankfully they overprinted the TFA Core so it shouldn't be too hard to get cheaply, but I'd consider the Original Core the more important of the two for Rebel players.

The Empire... not as much. TIE swarms are simply not viable without a LOT of extra cards, and the two best TIE Fighter and TIE/FO pilots (Howlrunner and Omega Leader, respectively) come in the individual packs. Howlrunner isn't even a necessity these days. If you're going to go Imperial, I'd grab just the TFA Core.

Each damage deck is different in the criticals it has; the main difference is that the original deck has harsher criticals but balances that out with cards which are 'dead' against ships without secondary weapons such as Proton Torpedoes.

Which faction were you thinking of going as?

Which faction were you thinking of going as?

Both. I'm excentric like that.

Not sure if I want to go Rebels and Empire or Resistance and First Order. Thought I'd ask about the cores before deciding.

Either way, I do like R2-D2.

Yeah, R2-D2 and Biggs pretty much make any player that wants to run Rebel at anytime want to get the Original Core set.

The TFA set damage deck is better balanced. T-70's and TIE FO's are more fun to play when starting out due to more options (s-loops, t-rolls, boost).

Honestly, I would recommend getting both eventually.

I think I'll get two of one and one of the other.

There really aren't enough ships for the Resistance and First Order sub-factions right now to really focus on just those. There are only 6 sets for those so far: FA Core, TIE/fo, T-70 X-Wing, TIE/sf, Upsilon Shuttle (coming out soon), and Heroes of the Resistance. It's very very common for people to mix old trilogy ships with Episode 7 ships these days.

Get both sets, really.

I'd hold off on getting a 3rd until/unless you find you want multiples of something in particular. Getting the individual expansions for the TIE fighter, X-Wing, TIE/Fo, and T-70 X-Wing gets you different pilots and upgrade cards. Eg TIE/Fo expansion has Omega Leader, Juke & Comm Relay which is the best basic TIE in the game. X-Wing expansion has Wedge Antilles. T-70 has Integrated Astromech - but Heroes of the Resistance also has these, along with better pilots for the T-70, and Rey in the Falcon. Original Falcon has better versions of Han & Chewie but you can always proxy cards unless you are taking part in tournaments - even opponents who don't like proxying cards should be ok about you doing so for a game or two while you decide if you want to buy them.

FFG normally releases the most recent errata when they reprint something. I'm not interested in a third original starter but I doubt they've updated the rule section in that to the most recent book although I do believe they should.

For what it's worth I also believe that any reprints of the OCS should include the updated damage deck as well.

Get one of each so you get multiples of the dice and rulers!

Just to throw a spanner in the works, there's a third faction (Scum & Villainy), although only Rebels and Imperials come in the core sets. For comparison of what's in each:

Some of the unique cards that come in the core sets are only available in those core sets, not in any other expansion pack.

I've not forgotten the Scum and Villainy. They will soon be getting my favourite Epic ship so far, the C-ROC Gozanti.

Imperial Gozanti is a very close second.

I do like the Gozanti's

Congrats!

It sounds like there's a costume party I wasn't invited to...
