Rigger plus modder... Silhouette 7 custom cruiser with tuned maneuvering thrusters?

By TheMOELANDER, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I guess somebody already talked about this somewhere, but my search wielded no results.

So yeah this is pretty munchkinlike, but I just went with it and build a test character with OggDude's character gen.

If you mod a bulk cruiser even further, you have 8 hardpoints for the ship! And a handling of -1. When you mod it with the Engine Ring Stabilizer, you get a +1 Handling...

On a bulk cruiser! It's pretty ridiculous.

It is still a bulk cruiser with all the disadvantages that come with a big silhouette. Sure, you get a decent enough handling, but at the same time you still roll a ton of (red) dices when going faster than a pair of jump boots in difficult terrain.

and are limited in the manuevers that you can do based on size and speed

And it's hard as poop to hit smaller targets.

That lets you get a Fancy Paint Job on a cruiser, sweet. Plus, we now know at least two of Thrawn's classes- he must have a third to bump his signature vehicle up to silhouette 8 :P .

for what, 600 xp? not all that ridiculous then. If you go with the hard points and maybe some weapon replacement (depending on GM), you are also talking about upwards of 5 mil creds for a average cruiser. Still not all that bad

You always can have a fancy paint job on your ship without having the talent :P

Though it might be the case that Thrawn has indeed this ship as his signature vehicle, but from his imperial commander spec. Must be something typical imperial, like "Choose a signature vehicle with sil 7 or more.

"Die for me" talent: When commanding your signature vehicle, on a check of the crew spend 2 destiny points and roll a successful hard leadership check. If the crew fails their check, kill one minion or rival, consider the skill level for that skill for all minions of the ship one higher than normal until the end of the session or increase the skill level of a single rivel by one permanently.

Ah, I could go on and on, imperial spec would offer such fun options to interact with the wast imperial resources, including personal.

Many of the other Rigger talents are unfortunately a complete waste on such a big ship, the extra SS and HT is utterly pointless, the Armour is a minor improvement. It's only really the Massive rank and the reduced Mechanics check difficulty that provide a tangible benefit.

Actually, adding another point of armor on a armor 10 ships is a massive increase in tank. Now against medium laser cannons such a ship is mostly immune anyway, but lets look at a proton torpedo attack with a single success with armor 10 vs armor 11.

Fighter sized Proton Torpedos do damage 8, breach 6. With one success this becomes against armor 10, 5 damage, against armor 11 the damage is reduced by 20% to 4 damage. The effect diminishes a little with more successes but always is significantly bigger than the 10% increase of the armor itself.

Next example: Medium Turbolasers, damage 10, breach 3, again with one success.

Against armor 10 they deal 4 damage, against armor 11 the damage is reduced to 3, a 25% increase.

Next example: Light Turbolasers, damage 9, breach 2, one success

Against armor 10 they deal 2 damage, against armor 11 they deal 1 damage. 50% damage reduction.

So I would not underestimated this kind of damage reduction and it interacts in a very positive way as well with further armor increases from attachments.

I know that it is actually quite balanced in the way, that you are pretty badass when you have the XP to get all those talents. The price is actually not much of an issue in the case of an AoR game. If you have this much XP, you're bound to be up in contribution rank, and a capital ship as a reward isn't all that unreal then. I mean it can work if the whole troupe is working together on it and the mechanic PC is the chief of engineering, making this ship to his personal vessel, even though he won't command it.

I still find the idea of a +1 handling bulk cruiser (if you get the Engine Ring Stabilizer stated in MotPQ) pretty funny. But hey, 8 hardpoints on a capital ship, that's not to shabby! Either more guns or better targeting. There's a lot you can do to make the bulk cruiser a reasonable threat to the sil 8 Star Destroyers. Fierfek, RaW you can fit a retrofitted hangar for sil 5 ships in it, with the modification for a max. sil of 65 (!!!). If you don't stuff it with 13 x CR-90 Corvettes that means you can actually carry around 21 fighters in it... not too shabby at all.

I must be missing something. Signature Vehicle is limited to Sil-3. Two ranks of Larger Project increases the limit to 5. How does a Rigger get to use a Sil-7 cruiser as a Signature Vehicle when there are only two ranks of Larger Project available on the Rigger tree and the talent isn't available on any other tree?

There are 2 ranks of it in the Modder tree from Special Modifications

Thanks, Richard!

how big is the i7 from friends like these? it seems like it might be a better choice for a large ship

It's Sil 7, but even the writer admits that the stats for it are incomplete/messed up and errata for it will never appear.

This looks like Sil 6 to me:

Oops. You're right, it's Sil 6. It still doesn't have enough gunners to fire even half of its weapons.

And the picture on page 83 has the Ion Cannons and the Quad Laser Turrets, but I’m not seeing any of the Medium Turbolasers:

Interestingly it does have enough gunners to fire all of a single type of gun though. It seems designed for the gunners to move stations to the weapons system most appropriate to the situation... that takes time though.

That ship also has 100 misfits and pirates lounging around as well as 65 potential passengers so there should be some with Gunnery 1+ or high Agility to man the extra cannons during a fight.
