New Republic / Resistance / Whatevs

By Greatfrito, in Star Wars: Armada

We have E-wings, which come from outside the standard Rebel/Imperial era (... right?).

Do we think we'll get more slightly-out-of-era ships, just assigned to the factions that make sense? Will we get First Order ships as just Empire ships? Resistance ships as Rebel? Will we see more EU stuff brought in, and get some Imperial Remnant and/or EU New Republic ships for the proper factions?

If we do get them, it would Better to assign them to their appropriate faction of origin as making a whole new faction would require like 8 new squadrons and 4 ships.

X-Wing is a kind of precedent for this with Resistance ships working for the Rebellion, and First Order ships working for the Empire. I don't think they'll be hard-coded strictly different factions, but it would be interesting to bisect the sides into four distinct factions for some tournament formats. We'll need a lot more ships for it though... I wonder if X-Wing will do something like that.

Ep 8's release might be a better time to ask when First Order and Resistance craft will make a debut. There are no Resistance ships to field against the Resurgent, which is the only fighting capital ship we know of in that time period. The Rebels don't even have the Tantive to fall back on, unless you really wanted to press Solo's old freighter into the Rebellion.

The resistance has Home One and another MC80 of unknown type called Echo of Hope that have been refitted to serve as Resistance ships. The First Order also has the Nebulon-K frigate but we don't know what it looks like and the freighter that Han and Chewie used may be used by the First Order as Finn identifies it as the First Order when they are caught by it. Along with the resistance transport and new xwings as well as the transports, shuttles and new ties for the first order there's enough to start making their factions.

Let's get a few things out of the way.

First off, in X-wing the Empire and Rebellion are entirely separate factions from the First Order and Resistance. It says so right there on the card, and in the TFA core set. However, they are allied to each other to maintain viability as the FO and Resistance are added into the line over the course of six years of new movies. In the Aftermath books, Leia and the leaders of the New Republic are openly hostile frenemies, much like the Rebellion and Saw Guerrerra in Rogue One.

Second, there just isn't enough information on either faction to predict current or future additions. While we can guess that the Finalizer/Resurgence Class will be added, we simply don't know about any new ship designs in the new trilogy aside from Han Solo's bulk freighter thing.

Third, and this is important, is that Disney is gladly bringing in the old characters and some ships, but they aren't at all concerned with their place in the universe until hey have the right fit for them. For all we know, the E-Wing may now be regional equivalent to the X-Wing like TIE Strikers on Scarif. One of the best things I've seen in recent canon is the transition of the Y-Wing from a top-of-the-line military space superiority heavy fighter in The Clone Wars to the somewhat decrepit heavy bomber it is in the GCW era. Disney is being careful to introduce new stuff when it wants to. We can safely assume that the E-Wing is supposed to exist, in some capacity, as a newer Rebel space superiority fighter but we'll have to wait to see if it has a major impact in he films or cartoons.

As much as I'd like First Order and New Republic/Resistance, I'm happy to wait for FFG to do it when the time is right.

X-Wing saw the Introduction of the new movie factions when all the excitement over the movie started along with the trailer and toys. If we see capital ships, in trailer or toys, leading up to EpVIII then I'll be on this forum myself asking: "when?" However, if the movies follow the same pattern as the Originals and Prequels, it'd be Episode IX when we have a fleet battle.

If The Force Awakens and X-Wing are anything to go by it'll be worth the wait. Think what you want about the movie, those starfighters and the Resurgent were awesome.

I suspect Imperial Assault will see Resistance and First Order before Armada.

i hope so, but currently there isnt enough ships for it to be viable, so i'd rather next wave be venators or somthing
