A Quick question about Colonel Jendon

By xero989, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

I could not find this on the forums, but just a quick question about him is ability reads During your activation, instead of attacking you may choose 1 friendly squadron at distance 1-2 that squadron may perform an attack (even if it has already activated)

my question is this if Colonel Jendon activates in the squadrons phase and moves can he still use that ability, because He was not activated by a ship he cant attack himself, but Instead of attacking he uses his ability instead of attacking. Can he do that even thought he could not attack himself? there has been some confusion on this subject in my area. thanks!

Quick answer, no

I just played a game today where I let my opponent move then activated something else. I'd prefer if it wasn't allowed but it clearly said instead of attacking, didn't mention moving at all.

Generally, in FFG rule sets - "Instead of Attacking" means you must have an attack to give up. So if its just the Squadron Phase, and you Move - you don't have an opportunity to attack to give up...

In the squadrons phase he can only attack or move not both. Only rogue ships can move and attack.

Thua the col has three options, or move, attack, or spend his attack to let someone else attack

Oh with my comment I meant that I allowed him to move the shuttle during a ships squadron command, then instead of attacking he used the card to allow a different squadron to attack a second time, which I assume to be correct. I agree during the squadron phase it's one or the other for sure

What if Jendon is moved via a squadron command and moves to a location where he has nothing to attack. Can he then use his ability?

Yes, he still has an :opportunity: to attack.

The Armada Rules say that you declare an attack before you even measure to see if you are in Range. So not having someone in range isn't a prerequisite for having an attack - having an attack is a prerequisite to checking if someone is in range.

That's what is important here... You have an attack "order" for better or worse... You give up that "order" to use his ability...

Are you sure that's the case? Since you can measure range at any time, you know if you're in range of an attack or not. Don't you have to be in distance 1, making an attack or able to, at least, to be able to give it away to someone else?

You may know that you are not in range, but that does not prevent you from declaring an attack. It just means the attack will eventually be cancelled due to the lack of valid targets.

Having the opportunity to attempt an attack is the only prerequisite for resolving "Instead of attacking" abilities.
