Looking at fleet combat I wondered if we could come out with a submarine analog for RT to round out the capital ships v carriers set we currently have?
I was thinking of an advanced stealth tech that puts the craft slightly out of phase rendering it undetectable by normal Auger arrays - like with WW2 subs they would only be able to remain in this state for a certain number of turns and their own sensors would be impaired during the phase.
While phased they are immune to standard ships weapons but cannot fire their own either. Arm them with a single torpedo launcher.
For balance they would be smaller than frigates with lower speeds and less armour so that they are suitably vulnerable if caught out of stealth.
Their nemesis would be destroyers which would be able to scan for them and could be equipped with 'phase charges' which could be used to damage them while out of phase.
Additionally give fighters/bombers the ability to spot them within 3VU's? And for torpedo bombers to be able to carry 'phase charges'.
Like their WW2 equivalents they would be devastating against un-escorted merchant shipping but much more vulnerable in fleet engagements where there should be plenty of destroyers and small craft.
Wolf packs of stealth ships would be a threat to almost anything...
Any thoughts? It should give destroyers a lot more purpose than they currently have.
