wording of Swarm Leader

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing Rules Questions

"When performing a primary weapon attack, choose up to 2 other friendly ships that have the defender inside their firing arcs at Range 1-3. Remove 1 evade token from each chosen ship to roll 1 additional attack die for each token removed."

Does that mean (as I believe it does) the evade token supplying ships must be within range 1-3 of the swarm leader's target but NOT within 1-3 of the swarm leader?

That is correct ... so having your swarm leader be a bit of a flanker can work well.

Best way of thinking is up to 2 other friendly ships with an evade need to be able to attack your ship with the upgrade card's target. Then you may "harvest" their evades to add dice to your attack (though its worth noting that if you are unable to attack due to say landed on an asteroid but still have an evade somehow, such as x7, it still works since the "other friendly ships" arent actually doing anything, this is just an easier way to explain it than all the "in range" and "in arc" stuff)

The only stipulation is 1) Evade token exists and 2) they could attack your target if it was their turn. There is no range check on yourself.

A question raised in my group: Considering the wording "When attacking (...), choose...", is using Swarm Leader an obligation when conditions are met ?

For instance, "Ruthlessness" states "After you perform an attack that hits, you must choose..." and Guidance Chips states "you may change...".

I could not find in the rules or the FAQ a general guidance on how to consider card text with no "must"or "may".

It is not a may but 0 is still up to two ships

Yeah. Its not optional, but you can choose 0 friendly ships.

OK thanks.

Re-reading other cards, it seems that if there is no "may", it is a "must".
