What if Destiny Expanded to other IPs?

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Destiny

I'd be fine if this were "Generic fantasy game" ala MtG.

I'm an old D&D lover at heart, I kinda like it when the setting is "generic fantasy"

They've got that Runebound IP which, as far as I can recall, is an in-house creation which wouldn't require any external licensing. I've kept one eye on the new Runewars war game, and while I'm too time poor these days to start painting tiny men again, it does seem like an interesting and dynamic setting, ripe for Destinification. I'd buy in.

I know they don't have the license, but I think Transformers, modeled after G1 artwork and not the live action stills, would be fun to play in Destiny.

Crabbok, love your YouTube content!

I think the game mechanics are great, and I could see it as other IPs. Avengers content would be great.. I can imagine Spider-man's special as being able to steal an opponent's die and use it. You know, webshooters and all.

I have friends who won't touch it because it's star wars. Don't think star wars is some ever loving juggernaut. Some people really don't care for it at all, some people don't like sci fi period and prefer super heroes or fantasy. Don't think because it's the wars it can do no wrong. Star Wars Galaxies, I need say no more that star wars will not alone save something so there is no reason to throw away a great game concept because people who don't like star wars are "odd and few". Also that number grows very rapidly the more the market is flooded with star wars crap. Enjoy the game for what it is but other ips very well could save this game later on.

Indeed. I don't think it's just because some people don't like SW. Based on the feelings I've got (my experience only) I think some people associate SW games with either gimmicky trash, or overly complex arduous head-scratchers. Alternatively, some people think they need to know all about the SW universe to play it. Of course none of this is true with SWD, but I think there is that barrier to mass market take-up.

Just my 2 pence.

Please no. I think that would be the same as to mix different fuel type for a car engine.
Dice master is compatible with different sets but mechanics from different sets don't work.

Which SW game is gimicky or overly complex? Most of the SW games have been highly rated as great games for their time:

Decipher CCG

WotC CCG

WotC Minis

FFG LCG

FFG Empire vs Rebellion

FFG Imperial Assault

FFG X-Wing

FFG Armada

FFG RPG

Epic Duels

The one I will admit was gimicky and bad was Attactix, but it was actually very fun for the target audience (small children), so it didn't feel like a garbage game to the intended audience.

None that I know of (I think SW: Rebellion is bit complex but anyway..). I know they aren't, and you know they aren't. But for my casual gamer friends, if I tell them it's a Star Wars dice and card game, I think it sounds like it's something out of a cereal packet, or one of those £5 stocking fillers found in supermarkets at Christmas time :P

Knowing FFG we'll get a Lovecraft theme card/dice game....... oh wait, they already did that. Maybe they'll make that into an app......

Hearsay, but I don't believe the various Star Wars licenses allow the games to be directly compatible with other IPs.

Having said that, I'd love to have seen a Warhammer 40k "Destiny". At the end of the day, Star Wars is mainly endless iterations of rebel soldiers/good space wizards fighting imperial soldiers/bad space wizards with bounty hunters playing both sides. I like that 40k has so many factions with different values, goals and motivations. Star Wars is mainly divided between "we want to rule the galaxy", "we don't want THEM to rule the galaxy" and "I don't care who rules the galaxy, so long as I get paid".

That was my first thought too, could be pretty cool. The system is amazing.

" I have friends who won't touch it because it's star wars."

That's a pretty ridiculous bias. Especially if these friends play table top games? That's some serious irony, as table top players are at the end of too many bad discriminatory jokes just to have gamers themselves do it too.

I assume you are quoting me. I never said they dogged it I said they wouldn't play it because it's Star Wars. I totally get the mentality too as OT fans vs Prequel fans vs the new Disney gen can all have VERY different views on what Star Wars should be. I boycotted it for years in the prequel era because Lucas monkied with the original films and refused to still offer the original cuts. I have personally never forgiven Lucas for that. Was it his right? Sure. Do I have to just get over it? No. So yeah I completely understand someone looking at a tabletop game and going oh that looks cool, it's Star Wars based? Ug, pass.

Yeah I think for some people, since the prequel era, to them SW has become a bit childish and over-the-top. (I don't think so). So I think this is part of the reason some people might be put off by a game like this.

Only if we can have an "And Knowing is Half the Battle" card!

Battletech/Mechwarrior would be an awesome IP :)

I'm imagining a Ferengi character with six resource facings on his die.

A special could be that he gives weapons redeploy. For a cost of one of corse, they are still greedy

Personally, I would enjoy the game less if it were released for other IPs. Similar to Margery's (AGoT) response when asked if she wanted to be a queen, I don't want to play a game, I want to play THE game. If Star Wars Destiny were just a skin of a much broader game, I'd lose enthusiasm.

That being said, I would certainly not fault FFG for releasing such games if it was profitable for them to do so, but I'd likely move to to something else, L5R perhaps. Thanks.

Let's not forget the FFG have trademarked the 'Duel Dice System' so I think they're certainly future proofing themselves to do multiple games with a game system very similar (if not identical) to SWD

So, I just started playing through Mass Effect 2 again, anticipating the arrival of Andromeda. I think that there's plenty of characters and story to make a fun version of Destiny. I'd love to see a ME version but I don't know how popular that would really be with others. Probably as popular as the GI Joe version, just different crowds... :p
