Fenn, Manaroo, Kavil(!)

By So Crates, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Took this twist on mindlink lists, by including Kavil instead of the more usual thugs, and proceeded to go 3-0 at my FLGS during a monthly event. Got myself two tractor beam tokens and a Ketsu card to show for it :)

Anyway, I really like Kavil in this list because he nicely hangs on the edges pushing out double 4 dice TLT shots while Fenn does his work to the face. Manaroo was good as a focus battery, but I still felt like it was suboptimal as I never used Feedback and only used Int Agent once. Any thoughts on changes for Manaroo, even for a different ship?

I run an almost identical list successfully as well. Vectored Thrusters on Kavil is definitely worth it. That sort of repositioning suits him far better than engine upgrade, especially out of those sweet green 3's.

And you're right about Manaroo. This list is one that's built for speed so distance is a factor in her using those current upgrades. The reason feedback array and intel agent aren't coming into play is because you are probably flying her so well opponents can't close in for you to take advantage. Illicits beside Burnout SLAM and BMSTs really don't do much as much in this type of list for her.

What does, is anything that just deters ANY type of engagement from being taken on her by aces or at range 3 early game. Drop feedback array and upgrade the unhinged to R5-P8. You'll be a better pilot by having to fly her more carefully and clearing stress more tactically, and if any ship go after her your other two aces are fast enough to get to her and make them pay. Then take BMSTs to also make opponents reconsider PTLs into range 1-2 to attack her if she gets isolated. Two potential hits on a low shield range 1-2 ace is a major deterrent and will make them fly a bit differently. Also switch IA to Inspiring Recruit in case you get panic attacked with multiple stressers like Stresshog, Stramhog, Rebel Captive / Mara Jade etc, the banes of mindlink lists. Having Manaroo take that focus early is VITAL to the other two ships getting their mods. This list does bump you to 99 though.

If you don't want the BMSTs your 98 bid is still intact and the list is still strong on its' own. Your call ;)

I like R2 Agro a lot on Kavil. With Mindlink that's typically going to get you two well-modified, possibly fully-modified, 4-die TLT shots. That's punching damage through Soontir territory. I really wanna try this list out, it seems like it could be a really good entry into the canon of 'Mana, Fenn, and X' lists.

E: this I think is how I'd build it:

Kavil (24)
Attanni Mindlink (1)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R4 Agromech (2)
Vectored Thrusters (2)

Manaroo (27)
Attanni Mindlink (1)
Intelligence Agent (1)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
Anti-Pursuit Lasers (2)

Fenn Rau (28)
Attanni Mindlink (1)
Autothrusters (2)
Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Use Mana aggressively as a bumpmaster, with the intel agent also offering excellent info about ship positions for everyone as both of the others have high PS and repositioning actions.

I play a similar list and find I extremely strong. I find Kavil carries a lot more weight in this list than people realize. I am 10-1 with it currently and it will see its first real test in tournament action this weekend.

Mindlink List 2 (100)

Asajj Ventress (40) - Lancer-class Pursuit Craft

Attanni Mindlink (1), Latts Razzi (2)

Manaroo (28) - JumpMaster 5000

Attanni Mindlink (1)

Kavil (32) - Y-Wing

Attanni Mindlink (1), Twin Laser Turret (6), Unhinged Astromech (1)

If I was going to bring TLT Kavil as the third ship, I think I'd try to give Manaroo some teeth to help push through some damage. Have her take TLs and get focus to modify her shot from one of the other two. If she doesn't have anything worth shooting at, pass her tokens off to someone that can use it. You lose a ton of durability by bringing Kavil instead of Ventress so I think you need to push up the damage output a bit. After a couple of 4 dice TLT shots from Kavil, Manaroo should be throwing those Plasma Torps at a tokenless target most of the time.

Manaroo (27)

Attanni Mindlink (1)

Extra Munitions (2)

Plasma Torpedoes (3)

Unhinged Astromech (1)

Guidance Chips (0)

Kavil (24)

Attanni Mindlink (1)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Unhinged Astromech (1)

Vectored Thrusters (2)

Fenn Rau (28)

Autothrusters (2)

Concord Dawn Protector (1)

I fly Manaroo Aces too!

I prefer Talonbane myself but Kavil looks good too. Try this.

Manaroo + Unhinged + K4 + Feedback

Fenn + PTL + Autos

Then throw in Kavil.

I really like Manaroo like this cuz she is cheap, she generates tokens and the Feedback Array can win games. PTL on Fenn for the reposition is too good to pass up for anything else, especially since Manaroo can just dump him a token stack. A PS 9 Kavil would be really great in complementing Fenn here too as you'd be firing TLT shots like an ace.

Just my two cents. Fenn really shines as an arc dodger with Manaroo around.

I like that list too. I ran Manaroo, Palob, Guri a LOT before Fenn came out, but it's a similar concept.

I'd recommend K4 droid and unhinged on her (simple swap from feedback/Intel agent). Manaroo really is the lynch pin, and a good as feedback is, she's probably too important to carry it.

K4 allows her to be an even better support piece, and a very efficient closer as her squadmates die. And since it's automatic, she's still a very good blocker. She doesn't do the extra damage of APLs, but when she's preventing actions, and still getting free ones, you can really start tilting the odds in your favor.

Good luck!

I would argue that Feedback Array is vital for Manaroo. With that threat on the board you can really mess with priority. I have lost count of the times people have tried to focus her down before she gets an autokill on some poor sap. Its even better when they shoot at Manny with their whole list because they forgot about FA and then left a 1 hull token stacked Defender or Soontir parked too close.

Only owning two copies of AM makes it hard for me to fly Mindlink lists but perhaps I could manage...

Sorry to butt in here but how would you add Mindlink to a list with K4 Manaroo and PTL Fenn? Manaroo could Mindlink with another pilot, but who?

How'd it go?

My original thought on this list was;

Kavil with Autoblaster and Vectored Thrusters (Mindlink and Unhinged) and use him as an ace hunter. He'll out PS most Defenders and good play can force a lot of aces into either taking the hits, or staying out of the fight for a round or 2. Gives points for maybe Connor nets and/or some 'stuff' on Manaroo. Fill with Fenn of course. Maybe too difficult to get Kavil in position, have to plan the engagement really well. But I feel once Kavil is in there he can mix it up really well, which hopefully compliments Fenn but allowing him to really take advantage of the positioning.

But 4 dice TLTs too reliable to pass up? Just speed 3 round the outside and Fenn makes them pay for chasing? Hopefully going to test them both out myself soon. I ended up side lining Kavil in favour of a party bus and occasionally the classic Asajj, Fenn and Manny. Now eager to try out the Kavil version.

I won the 26 man tourney playing out of a store that is toughest of the tough in the Northeast. I went 5-0 in Swiss and beat the most recent MA Regionals Champion on my way to the cut and proceeded to win out. So 7-0 overall. Won myself a Worlds Alt Art Inquisitor, Alt Art Ketsu and over $130 in store credit.

The list just gels together, all ships want to play dump and chase. The all want to move quickly skirting around the edge of the board and Manaroo can get in front and jam up the opponents ships with a block if my opponent wants to joust, then I leapfrog past them and burn out forcing the chase. Kavil just eats Defenders up with a 4 dice turret too.

**Update** CT Regionals today.....5-1 overall in Swiss, 7th out of 93. Made the Top 16 cut tomorrow (today, since it's already after midnight). My sole loss coming to the player who finished 21st at Worlds, flying Dengaroo.

Big congrats! Haven't had the chance to practice this. Definitely next on my list.
