Do you ever forsee FFG creating a National/World Ranking system? Would it be based on Regional/National/Worlds reports, or could you add Store Championship in there? I would really like to see them do a Invite Only event, of like the top 18/32 players.
Ranking System
Meh. I don't see any value in it. Especially when the Open Series accomplishes a remarkably similar goal.
The last minis game I played had one of those. It's novel but kinda meh.

I do not see the Open Series really being anymore than a Super Regional, or maybe a primer for Nationals. They are very limited in scope and does not achieve what I was referring to.
I don't see a reason why, but then again I'm not one to spend to travel to national/worlds/etc so what do I know.
Functionally impossible. Unlike in traditional sports and eSports, even the top players rarely travel out of their region for anything but Nationals and Worlds. With so many competing players, in a swiss bracket no less, it's impossible to compare players on a reasonable scale. All you'd be able to compare is the top 8 of Regionals and up, and there's no way to tell, out of the dozens of regionals held all over the world, which players are better.
Like for instance, take Smash Bros. Melee. We can have a top 100 ranking there, because there's monthly larger-scale(compared to the weeklies normally held) tournaments at local venues, then you have multiple regional events that's bigger than a monthly but not quite a major, then you have Majors which are your EVOs, Genesis, Pound, The Big House, etc, with most of the top 100 attending monthlies and regionals in their area and attending all or most of the multiple majors. Given the variance in performance at all of those events, with the dozens of matches played against the other top 100 players at each one, it's super easy to track who performed how, and how well or poorly they did in those matches, and sort them into the next year's ranking.
X-Wing may have an official tournament structuring, but player rankings can't fit into that by the very nature of how tournaments are run.
I suggested this a while back. It got a largely negative response from this forum, so I put it on hold. I was suggesting it be independent of ffg though.

I think it would be nice to have some ranking system official or not .
I still own the rights to the domain and could get the system up and running pretty quickly if people are still interested.
A ranking system will happen when X-wing tournaments start getting significant cash prizes for the top8.

I've been saying for several years, that FFG should have some sort of cash compensation at Nationals/Worlds. This is a competitive *sport*, that we all spend large sums of money on.
It's not like it'd be hard, Wizkids has one that was perfectly adequate for heroclix and dice masters. That said, IIRC FFG has expressed they have no interest in maintaining one.

I mention cash prizes, but I think the game would have to be turned into a video game so as to avoid any possibility of 'bumping' ships for advantage. As long as it's a standard tabletop game there should only be cool tokens and stuff as prizes.

It would be no more of an issue than it is now.
Website is going up now, Rankings are going to be updated every Tuesday (so tomorrow).
If any of you has more data from Mississippi, Missouri, Fargo, Ohio, Plano, or Wisconsin it would really help! I also have some data from Baltimore and North American championships but could really use the full swiss list if anyone has access to it.

And FFG has consistently said that they want to avoid turning their games into those types of games.

Sorry, but the Open Series seems to be ranked above nationals, at least outside of the united states. They are international events, more like small worlds or european championships than super regionals.
In many ways they could promote an international ranking, if they wanted. Which they don't seem to want.
I like the idea and hopefully it'll help with the first rounds of swiss, if one is paired with someone of similar skill level.

Actually I think it would be. Right now (as seen on Streams and such) people are pretty easy-going about the game because they're playing plastic spaceships for bragging rights.
Add a significant sum of money to the mix and things start getting way more serious. Just look at any sport, how close to the edge of the rules players are pushing it.
The only way you can make tabletop x-wing a pro game IMO is by having a permanent referee or at least video feed of all games, and I doubt that's in any way feasible.
Decipher had a worldwide ELO ranking system for the Star Wars CCG back in the late 90s. Tournament data was sent in and the list was available on the website. Of course it was impossible to compare players from different areas which never overlap, but it was fun to have, not meaningful and accurate.
I think it would be the same for X Wing, but I can't see FFG supporting it.
SO, I updated the rankings today because a ton of new data was sent my way on Reddit. That, and I found a couple names that were the same people but spelled wrong or used different spellings etc.
Also, I really want to use the calendar on the site to help people looking for events. So if you have an event coming up you would like put on there shoot me an email [email protected]

To an extent. People do really want the swag as the market for it is huge. For example, I paid for my trip to nationals by selling my extra winnings from the previous regionals. And my Nationals swag and Regionals swag so far bought my domain and website publisher for the next two years. Also, a free trip to orlando, all expenses paid, is quite a lot. I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but there is a lot more at stake then bragging rights already.

I agree, in the weighting system I am developing they are weighted the same as the Continental Championships. Especially with was it is at stake (as mentioned above) people are going to be "going hard there" and they will be large events that people will travel far and wide to attend. I know people that are flying cross country to play in one or another.

YUP, I think i need at least 100 tournaments in there before I really start to be confident in the results. Lots of work ahead, but it is really fun and interesting just to play with the data and thanks for the support!
As someone only playing X wing about a year, I was shocked there was no ranking system in existence. I come from the wargaming side, specifically ASL. They have had a unofficial system for years. Most ASL tourneys are single elimination, but those that are not use some form of the rankings for pairings. Seems obvious to use a similar system in x wing for early swiss rounds to balance SoS or MoV. Not sure of the details, but it can be worked out.
If nothing else, the rankings are interesting to look at. After a few years and many games, the cream rises to the top and you will be amazed at the stability of the top 50 players in ASL.

You are right, I might have added a bit too much hyperbole to my post ![]()
Yes, prizes have value, but it's still small enough so it remains a hobby.
My opinion is that, if you up the prizes to the point you can make a living out of it (some E-sports games have millions of $ in prizes) and therefore 'professional x-wing player' becomes a sustainable careeer prospect, then you will see a pretty drastic change in what kind of people are at the top and their attitude.
