The Empire may be at the low end of it's Sin Wave now while the Scum and Rebels are higher than it is but just wait and things will turn the other way again.

Yes, Imperials value and show case their well-trained pilots. But I think we're trending toward game state where each faction's list of viable builds is shrinking. Thus, the OP's (presumed) point:
More upgrades, and build more build potentials, could bring variation to at least one faction.
Some may argue that Imperials have enough build variety. To that, I say, "Never"
But canonically Tie's are mass produced and are pretty much identical. The 'upgrades' don't really fit the fluff whereas rebel pilots have more say on their ships and more custom parts to represent them scrounging for stuff.
What would you like on a Tie fighter for example? They never had munitions or cannons like ions or tech or crew, etc.
Gameplay mechanics > fluff.
You can throw a Shield Upgrade onto a TIE Fighter, how is that not breaking this "fluff" you speak of?
Also, in the TIE Figher and XvT games TIE Fighters did have munitions if the mission called for it.
I would like to see an Imperial Only upgrade (not a title) , that adds a tech upgrade slot. Something like this mod card gives you a tech slot and a mod slot to use because my RGT Soontir would like AT, Shield Upgrade and either Comm Relay or Pattern Analyzer
Every faction has its own quirks. Imperials have agile fighters with great dials. Making them the arc dodging faction. Rebels have higher health low agility ships. They can make many ships suit different purposes but most dials lack good green maneuvers so they are mostly jousters. Scum have great large based ships with awesome dials. They have access to lots of tricky upgrades so they are the wild cards.
Every player that identifies themselves as playing a specific faction can look at what the other factions have with envy. I play Rebels and I look at the dials of Scum and most Imperial ships with envy. This will always be the case in some way or another. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
interesting thought:
The Empire doesn't have astromech units on board ships for political reasons - aka everyone remembers the clone wars.
Which is something you see in Rogue One actually, where clearly K2SO is good with a blaster and a decent pilot, but no one wants to give him a weapon and in fact you never see the un hacked Imperial droids with weapons. Because the Empire came to power after defeating an enemy that used mass produced A.I. (bad A.I. to be sure) so they don't go in for drone star fighters or droid soldiers, or even robot assisted starfighters because they want to keep that distance between themselves and the CIS
an interesting flavourful explanation for no astromech slots for the empire

Except that there is (you said ships not fighters).
What you may perhaps not immediately realize from watching the movies is that there were also a lot of Astromech droids working in the service of the Galactic Empire.
R2-Q2 (who looks like Biggs’ droid and has the same name) spent several decades working with the Imperial fleet in the Expansion Region. It was brought aboard the Tantive IV after the ship got captured by the Devastator above Tatooine. R3-M3 was a Astromech that worked aboard the first Death Star, similar to R4-I9 (this droid hasn’t been officially identified in the movie itself, but at least one dark blue R4 unit appears in a behind the scenes clip on the Death Star). R4-M9 was the second Astromech droid brought aboard the Tantive IV to retrieve data from its computer banks. R2-Q5 and R5-J2 were two black Astromechs that operated aboard the second Death Star and were present when Darth Vader arrived.

So I think Imperials either need to gain access to the same non-faction upgrade slots that Rebels and Scum have or get their own faction slot (such as Imperial Astromech or Imperial Tech).
They introduced illicit slots for Scum and they are still the main users of that slot (2 ships for the Rebels is not a big deal), so I don't think it has to be a copy of something the other two have. I might be able to think of something after getting some sleep.

all in support roles - retrieving data from computer banks, maintaining the systems of larger ships and stations.
none in combat roles - plugged into starships, given weaponry.
the closest you see is the probe droid on Hoth which always came across to me as weapon for defence until the data can be transmitted followed by self destruction.
if there were to be droids for the empire, they would be in crew slots, not a dedicated astromech slot

Well okay then, at least you went from "No Imperial Astromechs" to "Some that are crew."

I can't disagree more with this, when I go to make a list right now I have so many good options is insane, if anything the list of viable builds is expanding.
Even my M3A swarm is feared locally.

Imperials don't necessarily need an "imperial astromech slot" so to speak. That was just an example, but they could greatly benefit by some imperial faction specific upgrade slot. Say Imperial tech or Dark Tech. Something to make up for the two less slots categories that the other factions have. To be honest I would also be satisfied if they just release an Imperial ship with a turret upgrade slot on it, but I am open to alternatives (hence the Imperial Tech or Imperial Astromech slots).
Couldn't the reason that the Empire don't have astromechs be that most of their ships don't have a hyperdrive and therefore don't need the help to calculate hyperspace jumps?
Perhaps they should have some sort of barrage options from the destroyers or whatever is carrying the ships?

Hyperdrive-equipped TIEs:
TAP and Advanced
Phantom
Defender
Possibly /SF
That's roughly half of all TIEs. Surprisingly the Punisher does not despite it being large enough and given the mission of long range tactical bomber. I guess A-wings and B-wings use the same tech as those long range TIEs listed above, cause they ain't got no beeping and blooping trash cans on em.
Is it sacrilege that I miss the hyperdrive rings from the clone wars?
And Palp. Don't forget that upgrade. The TIE Defender. They have the TIE Defender.
<drops mic>
Pretty much this, they started with the most effecient ship and then got an even more effecient one, and also have hands down the best crew upgrade.
But if they need a unique slot then how about Top Secret upgrades that include one off advanced tech like Mag Pulse warheads and Beam Weapons like jammers and such. The TIE avenger as well as Missile boat and Defender were test beds for all sorts of stuff, including SLAM. Another name for the upgrade could be Advanced Systems or Secret Tech or...something. This way it shows the efforts of the Empire in pumping out black projects and pouring tons of credits into R&D.

Very much so. Most senior imperial officers will have won their spurs in the clone wars, and will react to the phrase "battle droid" in much the same way a US navy officer above a certain age will react to the word "commie".

For the rebels as well, look at the reaction when K2 asks for a gun. It's some great subtle world building.

This.
Nicely typed. We all have bones to pick at differing locations and I doubt there has ever been a member who could post without bias to their favored faction. I love the fact that the factions are completely different at their core. So the only complaint I have beyond my opinions on slightly broken cards (that we all light to bust on from time to time), is:
The Rebels Cartoon stolen TIE fighter that has been shoe-horned into our lovely game......that just stinks in so many ways.
Should have been Stolen Tyderium.
And I'm still waiting for Imperial Protoype X-wings.
Even if every pilot, upgrade, etc. could be used in every ship of every faction, some people would still complain about this game.

I believe that's the central criticism of Star Trek: Attack Wing.

I would be all for it. If there was a TIE Avenger with a secret tech slot that only Imperials have that would be great.
Well its not like you cant add modifications to all of your ships, assuming you have the points for them, Its just a fact that the Imperials had mass produced CANNON UPGRADE fodder... see what i did there...hurrr hurr....

you can but I am talking about upgrade options.
Rebels have access to 12 upgrade slots
Scum also have access to 12 upgrade slots
Imperials have access to only 10.upgrade slots
So Rebels upgrade options is Imperials + turret & astromech
and scum upgrade options is Imperials + turret & salvaged astromech
Now I am not saying that Imperials need an "imperial astromech" slot exactly, or do they need turrets. But atleast give them their own faction upgrade slot (call it experimental tech or something) or if that is impossible then give them a ship with the turret upgrade slot. I don't think Emperor Palpatine is going to have much of an effect on TLTs.
There IS the unique "Double crew" upgrade slot
until Jabba comes out, anyway
